or can be sharpened to be scary sharp?
Brand and steel type appreciated.

EVERYTHING! The sharpest start with my MADD MAXX and its modified D-2 steel. Five and one-half inches of scapel! My Crawford Covert and Kasper have ATS-34 and pop the hair. In the production arena I have MT's with 154CM and a SERE 2000 w/VG-10.

Got a Bob Dozier Buckhunter on the way with D-2 steel that should be as sharp as anything I have. In fact would have had it yesterday, paid for Sat. delivery, except UPS said my address didn't exist! FED-EX from now on!

My Jimmy Fikes Cabin Boy is about the sharpest knife I've held or owned. Steel is 1084 I think, and chisel ground edge.
This knife will trim standing hair, cutting the hair above the skin level, like tree top trimming, very tough knife too as Jimmy makes them or used to make them, he sort of stopped a while back but has made some of the toughest swords and knives around.

The Spyderco calypso large and Jr.Lwt. with that vg-10 steel you will not find a sharper knife out the box at any price range and they are easy to keep that way too!

My scary sharp pic is my Cold Steel Mini Tanto. I have never used it, but the thing is wickedly sharp. It has an AUS-8 blade. 2nd would have to be my BM 735.

I was showing my custom Madpoet Camp set (by the late Mel Sorg jr) to a sort of knowitall guy once. He took the larger of the pair- a 4.5" semi skinner in D2- turned it over and laid it into his arm to do the "hair" test. I warned him and tried to stop him and then I watched as hair and a 2"x3" piece of skin came off. He stood there with his mouth open as a bunch of little dots of blood started to form. This knife will cut standing hair which in my opinion is what is meant by "hair popping" sharp.

I have a crawford kasper with the AUS-6m blade. It is nasty sharp... done on a Spydie sharpmaker. Passes both the hair test, and the floating paper test with flying colors. I think Archangel should tell everyone about his scary sharp entire collection....

William Henry Evolution with VG-10 and my Kershaw Boa with CPM440V. All my other knives (LCC, BM 705, 940, CRKT Tighe-Tac) are also very sharp but there is something about steels that have a fair amount of vanadium in them, for they beg to take on the sharpest edges.

My new Microtech SOCOM came to me as sharp as I've ever seen. And I'll second the emotions concerning the Calyposo jr. LONG LIVE THE FLAT GRIND!!!!

Sharpest (Out-of Box) that I own to date:

SERE 2000 (VG-10)
CS Safekeeper II (AUS-8A)
CS Scimitar (AUS-8A)

My Fred Perrin customs are absolutely S3 (Scary Scalpel Sharp). I used to think that nothing could be sharper than a factory fresh Microtech, but Fred Perrin blades have a far more wicked edge.
Here's a double edged Perrin Custom Bali along with my BM42s for comparison:

And here's my Fred Perrin Custom Buffalo Horn Bowie Griffe:

My BM 350. If Chris is reading this now, maybe he will post about who he cut himself the day after I sharpened it. Now he's afraid to handle it. 154CM is now my favorite steel.

Spydies... Bet you can't buy just one.

Greetings

That has got to be my three days old BM 720! Came scary sharp right out of the box.

Man, I love that knife! Only problem is now, that I need one that is a little smaller, a real gents knife and...and..., darn, I'm addicted!

Best regards
Bo

How about a Sebenza? I don't have one yet, but how about it from current owners. How do they fare?

All my knives are as sharp as I can make them, but none is sharper than my re-profiled Cold Steel SRK with Carbon V steel blade.

I have blades of ATS34, 440V and other alloys that take and hold keen edges, but none beat the edge on that Carbon V blade despite the thickness of the SRK blade.
