What is an EDC blade?

The definition of EDC is every- no exceptions, Day- 24 hour period, Carry, having it with you. therefore, if i have it with me every day, then it is EDC whether it is massive or not. My schedule is weird, and so my EDC for all the time I am in Jeans is the ZT 0200 and the Modded kershaw blur. when i am not, then it is a spec bump. the 0200 is a very beefy folder, the spec bump is long, and the blur is the sheeple knife. the fact that the 0200 is big does not mean that i carry it every day that i am in jeans, and same with the spec bump. This is my $.04 cents because I care.

An edc is a knife you carry everyday, and a edc rotation is a group of knives you carry alternating between them. I don't think size matters one bit. I carry three currently; a large, a medium, and a medium-small.

As someone said, "As long as you carry them all day long, then they are an edc knife.":)

EDITED TO ADD:

I don't think it matters one bit what you call it. If you don't like the term EDC, then simply do not use it. It's really just a way for us knife knuts to display and/or tell everyone about our knives. I don't know one true KK that isn't at least a little proud of their knives!!:)

Because "knife" is ANY knife.
But, an "EDC" is a knife you might carry any day of the week.

So for most of us an "EDC" is not
a hunting knife.
a machete.
a dive knife
a folding knife with a 6" blade.

All EDC's are knives. Not all knives would be EDC's .

Very well stated my friend.

I carry a fixed blade knife with a 3" to 4" blade every day, so I consider those EDC knives;

...I hike with bigger knives most days, but don't consider them EDC Blades.

EDC really depends on the user and the type/size of knife they're willing to carry.

EDC would be a state of being, rather than a property.

Some properties make a knife apropos for Every Day Carry; like the property of being light-weight, thin, slim, etc.

For example, I EDC several books, in fact, I EDC more books than I do knives. None of these books are exactly light-weight or easy to carry.

I also know a few people who do EDC short swords. Professed orthodox Sikhs, after baptism, are required by their faith to wear a kirpan every day.

A practical guide to the etymology of every day carry.

This is mostly what I carry every day. If it's not EDC, then what is it?

Anything with a 3 inch or less is an ideal EDC, fixed or folder. I carried a Busse SAR 3 in my front pocket for a while, but now I carry a Chris Reeve Mnandi clipped to my front pocket. I use it for all cutting chores, but it can also be an ideal lethal self-defense weapon b/c of its size and the ability to conceal it. The Mnandi is small, but it carries a surgeon's blade, thin and razor razor sharp. I love to carry my Busse BWM as my EDC, but its not practical. Even my Spyderco Para 2 would draw attention. What is most important is to have a sharp blade on you always that can be accessed quickly.

In the context of this thread, EDC is not taken to mean only a weapon, IMHO.

For me EDC's are simply the most useful and easiest to carry knives that I own. For example my two all-time favorite knives, while carriable, are NOT EDC's; a Case crimson bone penknife (way too small) and 2010 Recon 1 triad (way too big). While the Case is a little jewel of a knife and the Recon is bomb-proof they just wont cut it as EDC for me. For everyday jobs a 2 1/2 to 3 " blade is fine slip-joint or light duty lock (liner) will get the job done. Self defense is a non-issue for me so tactical knives are limited to their task-oriented usefulness.

A few thoughts:
--EDC means a knife that will be my regular carry. But that is a unique status among the numerous knives I own. I also buy a lot of other knives for other reasons. I may want to see what a blade shape is like, or a lock mechanism. Or even explore a manufacturer I hadn’t bought from before. I’m not likely to carry this every day (unless I fall in love), but I’d like to find out more.

Examples: for a few months I bought some Kershaws to see what they were like. Or I checked out slipjoints. Some of these I kept, some I traded or sold. Like a lot of folks here I like to play with different knives. Only the best of the best becomes my edc. I see a knife that interests me, and I can afford it, I’ll buy it to find out what it’s like. That doesn’t mean it will become my edc, and I’m not even buying it for that reason.

--as Knarfeng noted, you can buy knives for different purposes. A knife I reserve for when I go camping, say, or skindiving, may be a valuable, carefully chosen tool but not appropriate for edc, and only used for that particular activity.

--keep in mind that this is a huge country, with a lot of different lifestyles and living environments. A legitimate, totally appropriate edc knife for a rancher is probably an entirely different type of knife from the one that works for someone living in a large dense city.

Oooops... 3/4, I'm totally wrong with the EDC concept !!!

akimbo smartphones @_@

Interesting how you mention akimbo smartphones like it's so unusual, yet don't mention anything about the three knives in the picture. I guess knifenuts are a different breed! Just saying!

EDC is just EDC. Every day carry.

An EDC knife is just a knife you carry every day. It can be anything, as long as you carry it every day.

Some people seem to think it means small, non-threatening knives that are used for cutting threads on their shirt and opening mail. I usually have one of those, but my 5" fixed blades and 4" "tactical folders" are also part of my EDC at times. My EDC in the woods blade is a Junglas as of now.

I am under the assumption that an EDC blade is something lightweight and very portable that one can easily and comfortably carry daily, not just any knife that one happens to carry around, one could carry a broad sword around every day, but that does not make it an EDC blade.

my thoughts also... i used to EDC a cold steel recon1 and realized it was too big and a bit heavy for everyday/simple task use for me. now, i carry a BM mini nitrous stryker and a delica4 FFG is on the way
