What is an EDC blade?

Interesting how you mention akimbo smartphones like it's so unusual, yet don't mention anything about the three knives in the picture. I guess knifenuts are a different breed! Just saying!

Haha. I noticed the 3 knives but wanted to keep it short and witty.

If I carry it every day, why would it not be an Every Day Carry (EDC)? The term describes exactly what it is. And I do have a knife I carry every single day along with pockets full of other items and a hand gun. It shouldn't matter what it is or its size if it meets the definition of the term.

To me edc means what it means, it doesn't refer to just knives it refers to all the things I carry EVERYDAY- ie. My phone, my zippo, my wallet, bandanna(s), keys, rings(yes I carry them not wear), my maglite, etc.

Just my good ole 2cents

An edc is a knife you carry everyday, and a edc rotation is a group of knives you carry alternating between them. I don't think size matters one bit. I carry three currently; a large, a medium, and a medium-small.

As someone said, "As long as you carry them all day long, then they are an edc knife.":)

EDITED TO ADD:

I don't think it matters one bit what you call it. If you don't like the term EDC, then simply do not use it. It's really just a way for us knife knuts to display and/or tell everyone about our knives. I don't know one true KK that isn't at least a little proud of their knives!!:)

Leavin' a low carbon footprint, bein' green and recyclin' replies that echo my sentiments.

BTW here's my normal EDC.

EDC to me is whatever strikes my fancy that day. I even pack a Rajah 2 now and then but the size and weight get old fast. Funny how the fondness for a classic like a razer sharp 110 never dies though. :)

What's that tanto? Looks familiar.

It's 1 of 8 knives that a local maker, (Bud Nealy) brought to his first ECCKS in the mid 80s it's a Blued O-1 Aikuchi with dovetailed Black Linen Micarta scales.

As ya can see from the pics it is very loved and well used knife, I carry it everyday, it's been part of my EDC for over 20 years.

It might sound like a stupid thread, but I think it's not, and it's something I have often wondered about.
Yes, EDC is what u carry every day...the point is that we don't carry our EDC knives for the same reasons or use it for the same tasks, therefore people carry a huge variety of blades as EDC. I think it's kinda useless to talk about EDC knives without any other info on what tasks the knife is supposed to be used for.
Knife size, blade length, fixed/folder, blade thickness, weight, multitools, number of knives u go out with.....there's a lot of variable things on any EDC.
The word "knife" alone sounds way better...and then of course we'll add specifications on what kind of knife we are talking about.

I think another point that is often overlooked in EDC is the C. On several forums I see a lot of items that are supposed to be edc but have clearly never been carried or used.

I guess they only are carried for photo ops.

Why is it that other people are so concerned about what others do with their knives? For all you know those knives are used to open letters or whatnot.

I consider an EDC knife to be one that can help you carry out day to day tasks and if there's a need for a bigger blade I turn to my standby/backup that's in the vehicle.
I also have EDC set of keys and a lighter.

Oh, I could care less what others do with thier belongings but I'm know a safe queen when I see one and know when someone is trying to blow smoke.

How would you know when the pic was taken? Maybe they took the pic when the knife was new. A lot of people take pics of their knives like they take portraits. They present them in their best angles and in the best light. Or that particular knife may be their dedicated SD knife which is kept unused because it's reserved for serious social interactions. So you couldn't know what they do with their knives before or after they take their pic.

You could say this knife looks pristine but I broke of a little of the tip(repaired with and edge pro) cutting tire sidewalls at the range. I have also rebeveled this because I hit metal staples while breaking down a box. I'd say this one looks pretty good for a carry knife that gets used.

My EDC lineup changes _ I have one for workweek, one for weeknight, and one for weekend.

The knives that go in each lineup are very different.

Also - since I have probably 6 knives in my current total edc lineup they each don't show a lot of wear.

Of course, I am a knife nut, so the new ones keep a comin and push the older ones out of the rotation.

Why not just call it a knife, why add the term EDC?
"Every Day Carry" suggests its the knife someone has on them the majority of the time/"every day."

For me this encompasses two knives.

-My Kershaw Skyline (Manual opening/uses the flicker/no spring). It is very light, very sharp, is a good compact knife, and due to the flicker on the blade it would work well defensively. If I had to stab something the blade design would eliminate any risk of my hand sliding forward and me cutting myself. I carry this blade the vast majority of the time. Especially if I'm working, doing some kind of sport, out for a run, working out, etc. Its so light even in gym shorts I can stick it in my waistband and forget about it. Its the blade I grab before I walk out the door the vast majority of the time.

-My Kershaw Leek is my other 'EDC' knife. Its compact, elegant, razer sharp, and a suitable knife for when I may need to be dressed slightly nicer or when I don't expect I'll actually need a knife. Actually I don't think I've ever even cut anything with it even though I've carried it for over 2 years. If I'm going out to eat dinner or something like that its the knife I grab. Its slightly heavier then my Skyline but at the same time I'm usually going to be wearing a decent belt and a gun

Both of them are fairly priced, come razer sharp, are made in the USA, and of course are backed by the Kershaw Warranty. Of course I have other knives, but these two are my favorites because they have a good size/weight ratio and are all around great little knives. Chances are I'll have one or the other on me 99.9% of the time. Sometimes I'll start out my day with 1 of the two, then switch to the other depending on what I'm doing or where I'm going.

Do you describe your phOne as an EDC phone?

Many people do. There used to be a thread that people showed their entire EDC. This included items such as phones, sunglasses, watches, wallets, guns etc. EDC is often refered to as just knives as this is a knife forum, but it may be extended further. If you don't like the term, i dont see why it matters. Many here understand it and enjoy it....like it or hate it.

If you pack it now & then it would not be an EDC by definition. Whatever strikes your fancy on a particular day might be your carry for the day, but EDC stands for EVERY Day Carry so calling those things that you carry when you feel like it 'EDC' is just incorrect.

My phone is definitely one of my EDC items, it is part of my EDC loadout.
On a daily basis I leave the house carrying:
My wallet filled with money, cards & 2 card sized multi-tools
Victorinox Cybertool 34 (part of my EDC for over a decade)
Victorinox SwissTool X (new item replacing my Wave)
Leatherman k502x
Peanut lighter
Pico Widgy Pry tool
Nitecore D10
Olight Ti Infinitum
Liteflux LF2XT

These are items that I carry during the week and also during the weekend - they are true EDC items. There are 4 blades in total (2 on the Cybertool) and the heaviest item would be the ~10oz SwissTool and despite the weight I have been carrying it every day since the courier delivered it.

I have other items that are very suitable for EDC, but because I don't carry them every day I would not describe them as my EDC items. If I carry something on me when I go camping then that makes it part of my standard camping equipment and definitely NOT an EDC item. If I start carrying something everyday and intend to keep carrying it every day then its status gets elevated to 'EDC'. Currently my Squirt S4 is auditioning for a role as an EDC item, but because of all my other EDC tools I would only be carrying it as my tactical folding scissors - if it get enough use then it is 'in'.

EDC = stuff that you actually do carry on a daily basis. Literally EVERY day or something very close to it. For most people something that they carry every weekday is close enough to term 'EDC'. To me a weekend carry item is not carried close enough to EVERY day to qualify, others may have a different opinion but the are of course wrong.

You username is appropriate. :)

LOL... lots of color in this thread. My original idea of EDC was "what you can carry legally anywhere, all day long, etc. I looked up EDC and found: phones, combs, flashlights, blah blah blah... oh yeah, knives too!!... LOL...
