What is the smallest caliber you trust to protect yourself?

I think it depends on where you are and what you can or will comfortably carry. Of course, I prefer my Ed Brown. Most accurate .45 I've ever owned, fits my hand, inspires my confidence. Unfortunately, I don't always carry it because of my work. So I have a little .380 that is always there. In the Jeep in the back country, I carry the S&W Mountain Gun in .45LC. But I would never belittle someone else's choice. It is just like chocolate and vanilla, you choose.

Great story, Skunk! :D

Theres nothing like a tactical fishing rod skunk. :D I normally carry my smith airweight on the streets its the same handgun i took my ccw with. But in the woods its going to be a delta elite with 200 grainers its got about 200 more foot pounds of energy with Dt ammo than the 45acp.
I've got an early s prefix 4" smith 29 44mag but the 10mm has all i need in the woods around these parts.
If i were in bear country maybe the smith but i'm not, so the 10 to win around here.
Its to bad about your brother in law maybe i'll take mine up north to do some fishing he is kind of a loud mouth.:D:p

Best to prep your BIL with some bells and pepper spray. Bears up here like a little music when they eat spicy food! :D

SO A 454 IS WHAT I CARRY IN THE WOODS HAHAHA

Funny story!

I just about always have a KelTec P32 (.32) on me. But if out and about it is normally backing up something in 9mm or larger. It's the gun I have on me when I don't have a gun on me.

Andy

I carry a KelTec P3AT (.380ACP) because it fits in my pocket and is easy to carry. Since you'd be hard pressed to find a smaller gun, I don't see any point in going to a less powerful cartridge.

Love the use of that .22 Skunk! LMAO!

I have many to choose but I like my Sig sauer .380 for ease of carry. Its so sleek and compact.

Smallest is an NAA in .22 mag - the smallest NAA is just too tiny for my hands to grip but I consider the NAA .22 magnum a contact gun - stick it within 3 inches of the ear and fire.

After that is the S&W J frame Airlight PD in .22 magnum. 7 rounds of .22 magnum and light as a feather approx. 10 oz.

Next would be a Colt Gov't .380 they don't make them any more but they are IMO the perfect pocket pistol - great ergonomics not too small not too large - just right for me. I bit smaller than the Kahr CW9.

Then there is a Taurus J frame (almost) in Titanium with .44 special hardcast bullets.

After that a Kahr CW9 in 9mm.

If i was hiking rural I'd pack the .44 special and pepper spray. For 2 legged varmits all are good enough.

It's not EXACTLY the Colt Government 380, but the Sig P238 is a very nice version of the Colt Mustang (most parts interchangeable), and the new ones are available with a one-round extension bumper which gives more room to your hand. Also, the slidestops and slides themselves on the Sig are actually hardened properly and will last longer than the Colts. I agree, though, that they should have reproduced the "big" 380 too---the Gov. 380 just has class.

I usually carry my 9mm hk or 9mm kahr. They are the most comfortable to carry. I probably have the most practice with my 1911.

I thought i was a pretty good shot until a buddy of mine setup a gun n gun course at his place. 4 Torso sized targets varying 7-12 yards away 2 shots per target running from station to station under 20 seconds. My first go I hit each target with 1 of the 2 shots, only 1 in the center of the chest and 1 headshot (didnt count as more).

I think the Sig P238 would be a nice .380 but I already have 2 Colt Gov'ts if I didn't I'd go with the Sig.

All my choices are firearms I own.

Mine too. Of my four Government 380s, three are nearly incapable of being disassembled for cleaning, due to deformed slide stops. I really wish Colt wouldn't have saved that $5.50 per unit of extra heat treating. Hope you have better luck with yours--I changed springs every 1000 rounds, should have been every 500 in retrospect.

Hey, Skunk - I've a couple brother in laws I can loan you if you run low.
as to the rest of the argument -- whatever I have on me at the time.
anything is better than nothing.

great story Skunk, .....smallest caliber for me would be a Double Tap loaded .45 cal 230 grain bullet and the lead sled would be the famed 1911 of course. A 10mm out of a good 1911 would give me alot of confidence as well against a 300lb plus human attacker, evil aliens, zombies, or even dangerous animals. The .22 and the 9mm are just less expensive training calibers-not saying I would ever want to get hit with either................. I've been eyeballing and Ed Brown..................

I would have to say .380, that should slow them down untill I get to my real gun. My XD 40 which is never to far away.

Ever since I started hanging out with this guy I have not needed to protect myself. People just run away screaming.
