What is the ULTIMATE super steel?

If SPYDERCO can take an almost WORTHLESS and weak steel like D2 and coat it in TiCN, I'm wondering what the limits are for a knifemaker to take a steel that is ridiculously tough and hard--albeit prone to corrosion--and to coat it in something to nullify it's only vulnerability. Just a thought.

As an aside, that 'Knifesteelnerds' site is a great trove for information. However, it doesn't actually fully explore the limits/potential of the properties of each steel it lists. For example, they say D2 is adequately tough, but the metal they've tested has only been through a single heat treat sample. Therefore, it could be tougher, you never know. But then if it is tougher, does it deserve the score it's been assigned of 3.5/10 for 'toughness?'

No you might want to double check. You had your questions about D2 answered and even though the mods locked that one you can keep reading it till you understand it.
ROFL. You posted a knifesteelnerds link, that assigned D2 with a 'toughness' factor of 3.5/10. You answered nothing, you only reaffirmed a belief that's been corroborated by many others.

S sharpknives23 - it’s difficult to determine what the “best” steel would be unless you had a application in mind ? Edge stability? Impact stability? Stainless? Non magnetic? Wear resistance? There are too many “best” steels for even more applications.

Are you cutting sheet metal or cardboard? Do you spend a lot of time by the ocean ? Do you need something that can pry ? Food prep ? Throwing ? Dropping into tile accidentally ( like me , often ).

Hey guys, guess what? I WAS WRONG, D2 IS A MID RANGE STEEL!!!

I WAS WRONG!!!

I just mean by like how hard a steel can be made, obviously I don't want to use tin foil to build an engine with, as cost effective as it might be. I'm really liking this 'Crucible Industries' the more I learn about them.

That site has M390 scored pretty darn high. I should think in 2022, 'corrosion issues' ought to not be relevant, if a company can coat their product in some sort of titanium, why not do that?

These D2 cultists crack me up 🤣 they strike me as the types to be completely satisfied with McDonald's Happy Meals, despite the larger Big Mac or Quarter Pounder meals that are readily available.

Yup. Bigger is always better, that's why you should carry a claymore instead of these sissy, little folding knives.
