What is the ULTIMATE super steel?

It's not the wand, it's the magician.

For all the people badmouthing D2 steel......I'd take a D2 blade forged by Walter Brend or Bob Dozier to almost anything else. I challenge anyone to find a more suitable fixed blade steel than the 52100 super steel made by Ed Fowler.

For production knives - it's a bit more complicated because there are so many factors involved but the point is that the steel is just an ingredient. It's what you can do with it that makes it special.

i’m curious about s60v .. knifesteelnerds has it charted looking better than m390

Not better, different: https://knifesteelnerds.com/2020/08/17/cpm-s60v-the-forgotten-super-steel/

“...if people like M390/20CV/204P and want a bit more edge retention I think S60V is a good place to look. The main downside relative to M390 is lower corrosion resistance. S90V has higher edge retention and corrosion resistance than S60V but is more difficult to sharpen. For those comfortable with CBN and diamond sharpening stones S90V probably has a better combination of properties than S60V.”

Also google 440V ....

(I have Chinook1 and Military using it - I do like my S90V Military better, mostly due to mechanics :) )

I was not impressed by Cliff's review on one of his knives, quote and link:

The Pronghorn has a similar profile to how David Boye grinds his drop point hunters and thus the cutting ability is near identical. The edge holding initially matched the performance of some production knives but rapidly degraded and fell behind even "lower end steels" and significantly below another forged 52100 knife. The very shallow hardening also made the knife much easier to bend so much so that it was weaker than much slimmer blades. The handle ergonomics were also found to be rather poor in most respects. However the sheath was solid in both retention and general use.

These D2 cultists crack me up 🤣 they strike me as the types to be completely satisfied with McDonald's Happy Meals, despite the larger Big Mac or Quarter Pounder meals that are readily available.

You start threads showing you don’t really have experience with many knives at all…

Yet you’re lambasting other’s opinions. You are a troll, no doubt about it. Buy a Bob Dozier knife if you want to experience D2 steel ya dope.

Also, better start looking for a Knife Hero or you’re always going to be on the outside looking in. 🤣

Depends on what you're using the steel for. I'm waiting for crucible and Larrin to release a stainless A11 class steel (like 10v, vandals 8, k390 etc.) without sacrificing toughness due to chromium carbide formation. Like a k390 version of magnacut.

it was ran labeled by its other name.....440v while back. I asked Sal while back as in many years ago, if we'd see it again in production in spyderco and he kinda said and im paraphrasing...he hoped not. i remember he said was too hard to sharpen and was a pain to get hardness just right. he'd prefer s90v or 420v instead.

im thinking it must have wore on tooling badly. maybe slowed production down? I personally like the steel myself. I have a few folders in it.
