What is your dream forging press?

I got ahold of some FEA software and modeled this unit in it. After analysing the data and doing some manual calculations I realized i had to tweek the design a little. Of course the whole process had to be repeated to insure a structurally sound unit. I am confident that this unit will stand up to anything that you can throw at it. I also confirmed its ability to support any load that is off center.

What im saying is

THE CUP HOLDER IS COMPLETE!!!

Pepsi
Mike you're an OK guy :) :D

I was really getting nervous about the loads and weather the unit would be able to withstand lateral movement to the stress that would or could be applied to this particular design.
I know lots of thought and consideration has been calculated in the wee hour of the night and that high Tex. Computers are working in a number of engineers firms to com up with the best formula for the task at hand .
I have come to the conclusion with the help of my designer that the cup holder is a go. but do you think that it should have a slot in the ring so that in winter it may hold a coffee mug
just asking no biggy

Beer splatter more than soda, Bowie, or don't it matter? ;) Hopefully you didn't waste any of that Cox (?) County finest..... :(

A cup holder AND a can holder? You think we might be setting our sights to high?

LOL!! :D

y'all know how to seriously sidetrack.....:p

Love the cupholder....whatever....

What about a place to hang some ear protection?

;)

Daniel That is exactly the kind of input i want. Its the small things that make it cool. I didnt realize that these units were so noisy so it makes perfect sense to have all the tools you need at hand. I have a bunch of eyes and hooks that I was going to incorporate into this thing. Id rather put them on now instead of later.

In case anyones wondering why this is painted before i completed all the welding on it. I had an oppertunity to get this painted before I brought it home so I jumped at it. I knew i had alot more welding to do on it but Im hoping I will only scew up about 20% of the paint job and im hoping i can touch that up when im done and it will still look good.

any idea how much it weighs? would it help it if it was heavier?

An idea I had was.....if it needs weight/stiffness in the bottom end....you could fill the tube with concrete. That would give you compression strength (steel gives you tension strength). Not sure if it applies to your press....just wanted to bring it up. ;)

That not a problem fitz the space at the header tub on my press is a great place to hide (cox county best) and out of reach of the short of stature (Phyllis) and i have also built in a coffee heater in the Ram of my press you boys need to catch up hillbilly engineering scars me some times lol

bowie

the same that you would put in a logspliter do you have a northeren tool or oil supply they carry it, are you excited im sorry i did not build in the newest device in moderen press --a cup holder but inside the ram it will keep coffee hot lol hope you have fun call me when you get it ill lead you through a few or ill call you witch it cost me nothing after 9 easteren
thing bowie

I would be more than happy to forward one of my state of the art, lasered, cup holders to you, Ron, and you can distibute this much sout after item to whoever you see fit. Dont let this get around that im doing this. Steel doesnt grow on trees you know.

Ron, I can live without the cup holder. Knowing me it would end up getting filled up with something else anyway. I guess now I need to make some room in the shop.

I thought that was what your head was for Dan?? :D

You guys crack me up.

Yes, some of you are very stupid.

No, I'm not kidding :D :p :D

Back to the press.

Mike, I got the idea from my friend Bill (plain ol Bill on this thread) to have something surrounding the dies to catch scale (both molten HOT flux and regular old fire scale).

I built a tray around my dies that catches 98% of the scale. It keeps it off the floor and my other tools, and most importantly, OFF OF ME!

Also, I keep spacer blocks on said tray.

I have several spacer blocks made up, all cut to the same length (die width) and stamped so I can grap one in a hurry. I've got from 1/16" all the way up to 1-1/2"

With the equipment you have access to, I'm sure you could do some snazzy engraving to emboss the size on the blocks.

If I was going to redo my "scale catcher" I'd do it so that it's removable so I could get right up to the dies for twisting billets. I use a regular bench vice to hold billets while twisting... but if I could use the press dies it would be even easier.

I like the way you have the supports in the frame set-up to hold dies. Many folks have their dies all willy-nilly... just thrown here and there. I built a rack under my "scale catcher" that the dies hang from.

I painted the bottom dies blue and the top dies white, so I can grab them in a hurry without really looking at them real close to see which is top or bottom.

I'll get some pictures of my dies for you to give you an idea of what comes in handy FOR ME. I'd be interested to see/know what others like/use for dies as well.

It's looking GREAT Mike!!! I am SUPER jealous of that damn cup-holder! Okay... it's not so much the cup holder, as the knowledge and tools at your disposal that allowed you to crank that out. I could make one with my acetylene torch and grinder... but it would take me a day to make one that looks that good!

Cool stuff!!! :D

Oh yea, I wouldn't really worry about hearing protection.

While the hydraulic unit on a press is pretty loud, you're only running a press for short intervals.

I wear a glove on the hot hand and safey glasses when running my press, but that's it.

Ear muffs are a must with a power hammer... as it's REALLY loud and you run a hammer at longer intervals (MOST of the time, not always :) ).

You can argue with me when I'm deaf in 5 years

:D :p

Pictures would be great, Nick. I like the slag catcher idea to. Could you post a pic of that. I want to make one of those next week. I hope to also have the tank built next week.

Thanks everyone. Keep the ideas coming.

Does anyone have any cool ideas to hold the dies in place? What are the drawbacks of the traditional method of holding them?
Are the to loose?

Nick I agree slag holder or pans are a good thing to have’ slag has to go some where in a pan or on the floor Bill was the one to tell me of how nice it was to have so . I have been using Sheetrock tapers mud pans about 3" wide 16" long 3" deep SS and mounted about 3" below the anvil bas slag can be racked to the pan front and back and when full they can be lifted right off and empted
It will keep things cleaner
also the set blocks do a great job
what I recommend is to drill holes to the side of the 2"flat dies a little over 5/16 — build set blocks different sizes thick but keep them ½ “wide -drill holes the size to be taped for 5/16 but don’t tape it cut shorts pieces of all thread to size and press them through the holes the all thread will lock in place and the are fast change they can be kept on a rack ..when not in use the flat dies are fine it just has holes at the outside edges
Im like you Nick if I had his tools I would be dangers that don’t sound right does it.
