What is your dream forging press?

Ron, is this what you meant when you said to lengthen the collars? They are 8" long in this example.

Mike for what it's worth I like that..
if the lengths of the tubes = more than the distance across the plates
there should be no binding,, does that sound right?.. just thinking/typing out loud here :)

Dan, brother knifemaker, why not just start another thread to discuss this further if you want? There's a couple/several engineers, numerous fabrication welders, and a host of folks who've built stuff here who might get involved if it wasn't part of this thread.

Mike obviously doesn't want to discuss it anymore. IMHO, we should let him get on to other topical considerations like where to put the cupholder, and "does a press REALLY need a GPS and home theater system?". ;) Personally, I am waiting to see what he intends for dieholders and how he'll develop the hydraulic system.

Just my $.02
Let me try and explain myself one more time. I am not saying I know everything and Dan is stupid. Im not saying the way I fabricated the frame is the perfect way to build an H-frame press. Im not saying I dont want to discuss structural design in this thread. (I think Mr. Fitzgerald made a great suggestion about starting another thread about it so we can talk about other issues related to a press on this one) What im saying is that Dan doesnt agree with me and I am done trying to change his mind. I dont want to spend any more time debating it. My guess is that this is a issue of semantics. I dont see how us writting letters back and forth for the next 3 days is going to resolve anything. Dan, Lets get together someday if were ever in the same place and we can have a beer, argue about it untill the bars close and then we'll arm wrestle to see whos right. Can we just not do it here?

"I am not saying I know everything and Dan is stupid"

I'll say it,

Dan you're stupid :)

Just kidding Dan.

Mike, I think that's what he meant. At least that''s what i got from a conversation with him.

What are those two little tabs on the uprights down by the anvil plate?

Is that a can of Blatz in the holder?? ;)
I dont know what those are. I think when i stretched the guides i may have inadvertently moved something else.

Is Blatz the beer that was made in "Gods Country"?

You like it?

Im not doing it then;)

nanc thinks it was Hamm's. "From the land of sky blue waa-ters!" It's either that or Old Style and the "God's country" of LaCrosse.

Blatz was another WI brew. Used to be a huge tower sign down toward the IL border, maybe at the Brat Stop or Mars Cheese. Gack nasty, but like 40 cents a quart. :barf:

I think your right, It was Hamms. I remember the cartoon with the bear. I believe the price was $3 a case back when my grampa used to wake up at noon and down a case of it by 3 PM. Ah.. The memories of my childhood.

did you guys remember Black label beer. :barf: but it was cheap.. :)

Nanc said,"Sure, I remember it." I don't remember that one, Dan. There are so many regional beers around here I never could keep them straight. When one was down to their last two quarters, there was a downstate IL concoction called Bull Frog for 4-bits-a-six. Like it's name, it was sorta green and tasted like stagnant pond. I was never really a beer drinker; whiskey straight outta the bottle was more my speed. :(

I used to drink alot of..."Whats the Word? Thunderbird!, Whats the price? A dollar twice." :D

Okay, back to the press :D

OK I did some reading
and found the problem
on another

Engineers site, this guy is retired of 30 years in Engineer sevice and has a few things to say about Engineers and their ways.
go here
http://www.varmintal.com/aengr.htm
and scroll down to the bottom of the page then back up to the

section in blue..with the
heading
ENGINEERS AND SOCIAL SKILLS

the rest is intersing too.. ;)
now I know the why.. :D

Sounds about right, Dan. As chemists, we were always very certain that engineers were far geekier. Though not as dweeb-y as mathematicians, obviously. Physicists, of course, are all aliens.  :D :footinmou

mathematician.. that's My son he just graduated collage,, finally  :D

I have my line drawing done I'll post it in a new thread soon I hope.

Bowie - yes, I think a sound proofing chamber would work. Especially with some of he materials you are talking about (the egg crate stuffffff). The only concern I would have would be if someone made the chamber without much air room and tended to let the press run for periods of time. I think in that case there might be heat build up unless you have a good sized resevoir of fluid to act as a heat sink.
Fitzo - doesn't everyone have a cold drink holder, DVD player and GPS system built into their press?? I got the website updated a little guys - finally got the camera out at the same time with some knives.

probably only the ones with a dragon on the mast..... ;)

I got ahold of some FEA software and modeled this unit in it. After analysing the data and doing some manual calculations I realized i had to tweek the design a little. Of course the whole process had to be repeated to insure a structurally sound unit. I am confident that this unit will stand up to anything that you can throw at it. I also confirmed its ability to support any load that is off center.

What im saying is

THE CUP HOLDER IS COMPLETE!!!
