What is your favorite traditional pattern?

Well, I don´t have a lot of experience in Traditional knives, but up to now, I like the stockman best.

It´s a pretty cool pattern.

But, telling the truth, I like all of my knives... Soddies, Trappers, Barlows etc pp.

Kind regards
Andi

Toss up between a Moose (2010 forum knife put me on it) and stockman variations (my large sowbelly stockman by RR is great)...for pure functionality though nothing can beat an old traditional scout knife, I've carried a Wenger SI for a few years now and if MacGyver taught me anything (and he did) is I can get out of a sticky situation with one. :D

Yes I like that, and also think of Trappers, Barlows, Swaybacks, Doglegs etc.. to be "jack" knives as well.

All nice looking knives Stu and to my way of thinking too all are Jacks. The two blade Jack with both blades opening out of the same end is a hard pattern to beat.

Don´t have one yet, but a Barlow in carbon steel would be IT for me.
From the ones I DO have it´s the Peanut in CV.
The one I carry the most however has been the Alox Solo.

I like Barlows. I use to do a lot of metal detecting and found several barlows , rusted to death, around old farm houses. I have had two and lost both of them. Seems to be a pattern here.

Moose - my favorite is currently a GEC in Cracked Marble acrylic. My most used knife is probably a Case Moose in Black G-10.

Sorry to revive the old thread, but I've been back a few times to look at these wonderful knives. The traditional forum is the one that gets under my skin the most. I don't spend over $30 on a knife, but I'm compelled to buy American because of the history of these knives. I really like the jacks with 2 blades on the same end like the Case swayback. The thread on the buck 301s also makes me swoon. You guys make me want to spend frivolously!

Very difficult question to answer for me, on various levels. I guess I am more attached to certain knives than to a pattern in general.

My favorites are single blade trappers, like the GEC 73 in particular. I also like the 72 lockback version.
Mini Zulu would be a very close runner-up. Is that considered a 'pattern'?

Honorable mention to the sway back; probably my favorite pattern for aesthetics.

Interesting thread

I'm definetly a Barlow guy, but I have been carrying a Primble Trapper jr for the past couple of weeks. I'm not sure who made it (it's stamped China in the back) but it has nice jigged bone handles & F/F - it's done everything I've asked of it. The tang stamp has: JOHN PRIMBLE, MANCHESTER, OH, USA and JP 30 0071, STAINLESS, CHINA on the back. Nothing on the secondary blade.

Interesting thread...I wonder how much my opinions counts, being that I never handled any of those patterns, but still I'm giving my one cent here (2 cents is too much)
Jack with clip and wharncliff for me

Fausto,

I can recommend a CASE Wharncliffe Mini Trapper for you, decent Clip&Wharncliffe blades and just under 9cm closed. I think there is a bigger CASE version too but it's less pocket friendly. You could look at Shatt&Morgan's Series XVII knives from 2007, Horticultural knife- long Clip and a Sheepfoot.

I'm still very keen on my Tidioute Dogleg 56 in Amber Bone, gets nicer the more you carry it. Mind you, it's had a lot of competition lately from a Fontenille-Pataud from France in natural bone. Costs a lot more but the finish on these knives is another dimension. So, add Laguiole to the pattern favourites.

for a single blade, Lanny's.
multiblade, Roger's whittler.
on order, Tidioute Moose for some Nessmukin around.

Will, thanks for the suggestions, I had seen the Case knife u are talking about...but my first American traditional will be some GEC (as u might know).
Actually, I thought the game was only among American traditionals...otherwise, I would have mentioned "my" patterns (so far, no pattern can win over my deep Sardinian roots...).

I dearly love stockmans and cattle knives and about forty eleven other wonders, but my CASE/BOSE dogleg jack seems to dominate my right front pocket a rather large amount of time.

But I must tell you, I spend most of my cutting time with fixed blade knives- in the field and in the kitchen.

Barlows
Canoes
Congress'

I guess I would go Either Barlow or Canoe. Especially single back spring canoes with thin pen blades are especially good and useful with delicate secondary blade and really strong main blade. Though well made Congress is great aswell...

I like the Lanny's Clip. When I would carry a mutli-blade knife, I always found myself using only one blade. The Lanny's has a nice, beefy blade that seems to fit all my needs well in a package that is pleasing to my eye.

1) Stockman- any size from 3" to 4 1/4" handle

2) Congress - 4" handle with 4 blades

3) Canoe - esp single backspring models
