What kind of folder do you carry?

I got a sebenza 31 glass bead blast in yesterday. It was a little too slick for my liking. Particularly pulling it from the pocket and re gripping to deploy the blade. My sandblast 21 has more grip. So I decided to go crazy with my dremel cut off wheel. First I tried for a starburst pattern. That didn’t look great so I added more cuts in the other direction for this spiderweb pattern. It is super grippy! Then I tried my hand at some color with a torch. Overall I’m super pleased with this impromptu tinker session.

Outstanding ! Flame anodized in the end ?

Man, I just can't get behind the OTF thing. Would they be considered a folder? I look at them that way.
After years of wanting an OTF, I bought a used Microtech Hera II Mini.

It's everything that I thought it would be. A bladed fidget toy. It has more blade play than I would find acceptable in any folder. The bevels from the factory are extremely uneven. The factory edge was something like 25° on each side. When I tried to drop the angle, I realized how uneven it was sharpened.

So now it resides at my home work desk as a fidget toy.

Years ago, I remembered that old, cheap OTF I had decades ago, read up on OTFs and wound up getting a Microtech Navy SEAL Scarab.

Funny thing. It cost a lot more than that cheap, old OTF. Mechanism fired really hard (one of the various common comments I recalled reading, was to warn ANYONE you allowed to check out the knife, to hold it tight when activating it, because the blade would slam hard enough to knock it out of a loose grip. An owner commented about the tip being damaged when they let someone check it out, and the person dropped it onto concrete when they fired the blade).

Thing was, the springs were very strong, to fire that hard. It also meant the button took quite a bit more pressure than that old OTF I had decades ago, and I realized the same thing. To me, that Scarab was just an expensive fidget spinner, and ever since Ernie came out with the Wave deployment, switchblades aren’t even the fastest non-fixed blade deployment anymore.

Also realized that there are still a lot of places that have stupid laws regarding simply possessing a switchblade in public, whereas folders (and silly enough, assisted opening folders) are perfectly legal.

Wound up selling the Scarab.

P.S.
Balisongs make much better fidget toys anyway 😁

Yeah, I have a knife with an Emerson wave on it and it works fantastic. I think I'm just going to (continue) to pass on the OTF options out there. It just doesn't seem to be worth it.

I have a couple genuine Emersons, ZT Emerson collabs, and Fox Karambits with the Emerson Wave (still the absolute fastest deploying non-fixed blade. Standard wave folders have to be drawn backwards to deploy the blade, before bringing them forward into play. A Waved Karambit deploys on a forward draw AS it’s brought into play).

The fit, finish and action of the non-Emersons are all better than the genuine Emersons.

Yeah, the fit and finish on the ZTs is good, but they just don't do anything for me. They aren't as cool. Their handles are bad. They are too heavy. They are also uglier than Emersons. Emersons deploy reliably when I take them out and I don't have to think about how I draw them out and I like it. Titanium handles tend to slip around. When you hold an Emerson it feels like there is no way it would slip out of your grip. They stay put in your hand, they stay put in your pocket.

Not a fan of the wave.

Oh well.

Had a low serial number Commander back in the day.

Ernie's a nice guy. Couple of folks thought I was him at a Blade Show back in the 90's or early 2000's. We had a laugh about it over breakfast that morning.

Megafolder Monday, catching up on some yard work with this easy carrying Kershaw "Strata XL" in the pocket😁
