what knife brands will you not..........

Although I might buy again someday, I'm just sick of the whole Spyderco/Spydie thing. It's an average knife company that most people start out with an then progress to better quality. Plus thier lack of black blades is maddening.

Well maybe I'll buy a Gunting afterall:eek:

Shrade... I baught a shrade a month ago, i think it was a Cliffhanger. The thing was quite the POS. The plastic pocket clip had so much play,it felt like it was about to snap everytime i applied pressure. Also it took me about 3 tries to open it one handed. Very stiff and i got blisters from opening it. Blade was dull and the overall feel of the knife was shi*y. I'd rather buy a gerber ez-out for the same price.

never bought a Benchmade never had the inclination. Handled a friends mdl 940 and just didn't have no soul:D :D

Geez Chad, you never got over expecting that Mike @ Warranty was prefect.
Believe me, Spyderco's warranty & repair is good, but they are not perfect! No matter how many times we say they're good, they'll be bad once in a while!!!
There, got that out of the way.
I do not care for Emerson. Seeing jjcoolay's Commander left a very bad taste behind. I don't care for Benchmades except for the 710. I do not care for Gerber's multitools, cause they look flimsy. And yes, I do not care for a Chris Reeve because most of the time, a Spydie will do fine, and Mike will make it right, most of the time anyways  ;) :D
Update: to add my reason for BM, most often, I couldn't find a justifiable price, well except New Graham. However I couldn't always buy from them cause the duties will kill me.
Update 2: Also I'm unimpressed by other designs except AFCK, 690 and the 710 (and their variants) from Benchmade. I guess it's just me. *shrugs*

Quite honestly I don't see why you care or why you would bring it up here.

You are over simplifying things anyway, I never expect anyone to be perfect but I also won't tolerate being railed on for no good reason.

Why should I continue to send them my money when not only did Mike treat me like Sh*t on the phone, he sent back my knife with no repairs rendered, never even looked at the problem.

You list Chris Reeve as one of your "no's", have you ever put your money where your mouth is and bought one to find out for yourself or do you base your statements off of what other people say?

At least I came to my Spyderco decision on my own and not because I was influenced by others.

Delta Z. I don't appreciate nasty emails for expressing my opinion.

If I did hear influences from the anti-CR camp, then I'd admit that I didn't prove it myself. But my problem is not to question his quality, but to question his cost. I'm just a damn university student who happens to pretty much buy knives from money that I need to pay back in the future. And I'm fine with Spyderco's quality and their warranty & repair; I don't see how I truly need to pay $300USD+ for a knife, or how I could warrant to even pay for a used one. Often it goes for over 200USD in here as a used blade, and I couldn't get myself to pay for it.

Note I didn't based my comment about their quality, because I personally haven't seen one. As for Emerson, I could truely say overhype and under par in quality, and there is a consensus on my thread about the Emerson about their liners. That's why I did mentioned Emerson's quality, while suspend my judgement on CRK's stuff.
BTW I did saw a CRK survival fixed blade with a hollow handle. It was surprisingly good for the roughed up condition it's in.
As for why I care? Because I'm missing a great Spyderco dealer ;):D I couldn't bring myself to use the Worker, but I love it.
You said that I railed on you, yes, and you said that things are not that simple, probably. You have complained over and over that we in BFC and Spyderco Forum makes you think that Mike and his crew is perfect. We did mention that we appreciate his service (most of the time), we may have only mentioned that they're perfect figuratively. At least your complaint about we making you think Spyderco's Warranty service is perfect have been documented by your thread still buried in the Spyderco Forum in BFC, and that's of course, if I remember correctly. I'm not perfect you know ;)
Constantly allowing this myth of perfection to continue is not doing anyone any favors. I think Spyderco needs to hear it when they screw up and so do the people who buy their knives. Let everyone draw their own conclusions.

I am once again with Sticky on this one. Anything over 55-60 bucks and it will just set in the drawer. So, anyone selling knives over that amount won't get my toy money. If I lose or screw up one of these, at least I won't cry!!!:D :D dtsoll or aka cheapass!;)

Based on experience, I will buy from Spyderco, Al Mar, Benchmade and Victorinox.

Less likely to buy from Kershaw, CRKT and MOD.

Based on personal taste and/or reviews etc, I may buy from Marbles, CRK, Buck, Leatherman and SRKW.

Less likely to buy from Emerson, Strider and Microtech.

I will never be an expert reading what other people say about knives they've never handled either, so I don't cross anything off my list. I just buy what looks good at the time, and in the old days, that included a few losers. Now I look for variety, not loyalty to just one or a few companies. I like to buy what I don't have, a different size, a different style, a different maker or manufacturer.

I'm not sure what people mean by customer service since my knives seem to hold up real well. Part of that may be luck and part of it is maintenance. Part of it is not buying any more losers :D But none of it has to do with prejudice against a country or a company. If they have nothing I like the looks of, no, I'm not buying.

But only a few posts here have given substantive reasons for avoiding any particular knives.

I think that a more positive topic of "what knives would you or do you purchase. . .and why. . .would have been more productive.

But that's me. . .

And since we're on the subject. . .here's my nickles worth on what I purchase:

Productions

CRK (specifically the Sebbie. . .large PE type)
Microtech
Kershaw
Case
Spyderco
TiNives

Customs

Carson
Chew
Cook
Corby
Duncan
Huffman
Maxwell
Mayo
Mosier
Ralph
Smyth
Terzuola
Tomes
etc. . .

There are several reasons why I purchase their products. . .and I'm only speaking about the bladeware that I've purchased and had experience with. . .they make great stuff and I've never had a problem with any of their knives. Oh, and they stand behind what they make. :D

Life is good.

Thanks Rev_JCH! Now I know. :)

I have two knives from the makers you mention and I'm hap-hap-happy about them.

A Schrade 152OT Sharpfinger in 1095 that my wife got me for Christmas. It's beautiful and high quality. She also got me a Benchmade 551 drop point Griptillian which gets to help me everyday (she loved how my eyes bugged out when I saw it), but I'm talking about my wonderful, new Sharpfinger, here. My coworker has a Schrade/Kious that is just equisite (and priced to match, unfortunately).

A Smith & Wesson Cutting-Horse dual lockback thingy from my father-in-law. The serrated sheepsfoot was my left-hand carry until I discovered the Benchmade axis locked knives and it helped me with strings, pumpkins, and assorted bric-a-brac. Of course, serrations just make anything in charge of non-detailed cutting work better...

That doesn't mean that I'm suggesting you buy from Schrade or S&W, but that I've had good experiences with their products.

thats good thom! Im glad yo had good experiences with them!!! Ive had too many problems with schrade in the past to ever buy another, especially the clip hangers, and the lake and walker 2. as far as smith the linerlocks tend to be a little thin for my taste, and finish isnt that great (not to mention blade steel). cuttin horse??? wellllll...no comment.
please do not be offended though in any way, its certainly not my intention, only my opinion. With all that said it was nice of your wife and your father in law to give you cutlery for x-mas!!! :)

Lucky I didn't have experience with S&W's linerlocks. A lot of liners out there seem like they're as thin as paper, but not as strong.

Case. Every single one I've handled has felt like junk. Loose blades, poor walk/talk, dull, cheap steel, etc. Other than looks, they're not half the knife of a Schrade Old Timer.

Chris

I second that. Every Case I've ever owned was unacceptable. Years ago I got this "great" deal on three Case knives, small, medium and large, otherwise identical. Black plastic handles, single non-locking blade. Would never take an edge, wouldn't hold what little it did take. My brother and I, into antique furniture refinishing at the time, threw all three into a drawer to be used for cutting when we didn't want to screw up any cutting tools that we cared about.
