What knife features do you HATE that others LOVE?

I've got some tactical knives I like, but 90% of what the marketing guys call "tactical" - yeah, I'd say I hate them. When they say "tactical" and the knife looks like a mall ninja's wet dream - that ain't tactical, that's just stupid!

Tactical that I love - My BK-7 or BK-9
"Tactical" that I hate - yeah, there are threads full of them. They suck and I won't be buying them.

I hate Swiss Army Fixed Blade knives. That's why I have a Leatherman.

Stupid saw teeth on spines of fixed blades

Half serrated knives.

Chisel grinds

Stripes or "Tactical" coating

Designer Lanyard Beads...

Absurd knife designs...anything by Dork ops

Uncalled for "designs" or milling into the sides of a knife

Single thumb stud

Blade catches ...you think that crap actually works?!

Folders with ONLY tip up or tip down carry....read no option for buyer.

Specific for folders right?

- Combo edges - NOT serrations per se. I'd want a fully serrated blade or the serrations up-front near the belly.

- Tantos

- Single, one-sided thumbstuds - I need symmetry in design. Can't imagine walking around with just one "ear."

- All metal handles - slick, slippery, no insulation

- Poorly designed and constructed liner locks -I got a nick on my pinky to prove my hate for it!

- Top swedge/false grind - personally, no need for enhanced "penetration" on a folder that's less < 4" blade length. I'd rather it be on a large fighting knife with > 5" blade length.

Can anyone elaborate on why assisted opening is such a despised feature? I'm genuinely curious. I read the whole thread and the only reasons I saw were "just another thing to go wrong" and "I don't need help opening my knife." There have to be better reasons than that. Anyone?

I'm not against assisted openers as I have a few that I like however if I had my way all my knives would be non assisted. The main thing for me is that they just cause too much attention. Personally I don't like whipping my knife out in front of a bunch of people, and if I do I like to be able to open it slower without the "CLACK" that most AO's give off.

Lets face it, most people have no idea that there is a differance between assisted opening and automatic. I am a gun/knife dealer at a brick and mortar store and I constantly have to elaborate how AOs are completely legal and what makes them differant than an auto. If they see and hear the blade fly open super quick they are going to judge. Many knife nuts don't care how they are perceived by the public but in the line of work that I'm in I don't like to draw attention.

That said AOs are not a feature that I HATE like the OP asked. The only thing I can think of right now that I do hate is single thumb studs. I open my knives with my left hand a lot even though I'm a righty even if its just sitting here at the computer.

I'm also not big on lowrider pocket clips. Or when the material underneath the pocket clip is so aggresively textured that it instantly tears up your pants. Now that I think about it, I have completely stopped carrying anything that is textured underneath the pocket clip.

I hate...

Deep carry clips
Tip down only
Right hand holes only on tip up
Scales without at least a .060" liner
Autos with safeties
Bead blast blade finish
Shitty blade/handle ratio
Thin (>.125") blades on "hard use" folders
FRN handles

blade play -> HATE HATE HATE.
bead-blasted blades
black blades
clip points
serrations
flippers
sculls or any 'graphics'
bad handle ergos for big hands (all too common)

Call me old fashioned, but I do not like thumbholes...

So I guess you don't like thumb studs either? Since thumbholes were around before thumbstuds. Nail nicks all the way?

Features I don't like--edge that goes all the way to the handle (I like a choil or exposed tang)
Overly grippy material
Assisted openers--just unnecessary, not a deal breaker
I don't dislike flow-through construction, but I prefer a back spacer usually.
Huge, thick blades/grinds (I want it thin, so it can cut well)
Thumb studs (holes give better control)
Knive designs that "look cool" but have no functionality (Cold Steel seems to make some of these)
Anything that's made to be super "tactical" in a gimmicky, mall ninja sense

Chisel grind. Not a fan. Only exception might be in kitchen knife.
Partial serrations/combo edge. Generally prefer plain edge. Full serrations are useful in some applications.
Flippers. Hit and miss...depends on the design.
Flamed scales. Don't really get the appeal. Some of them look fine but some just don't look so good.
Bead blasted finishes. I used to (and still do) like them for the look but it'll scratch with the slightest rub on anything. Prone to corrosion too. Prefer tumbled/stone wash finish.
Anything "loud", overstated and impractical be it a logo, pocket clip, grind etc.

Serrations on the main blade. My Leatherman has one and i never use it.
Choils on anything. I paid for the whole blade and want to use the whole blade.
Finger grooves. As said earlier they seem to never fit my fingers.
Tiny flippers. If i have to work to position my finger to flip it.
Some: pocket clips, blade coatings that wear off fast and look lime crap, and most metal handles.
Chisel grinds Mirror polished anything.

Assisted opening,

Balisongs,
overly tactical with tanto blades,
I'd hate camo patterns too though some digicamo looks sweet,
Mirror polish,
cosmetic knives,
tactical knives,
neck carry (life's hard. don't put more weighs on your head.)
saw on knife's spine,
concealed carry.
and I hate to have bottle opener on my knives.

Serrations (except on my Cricket, love em on my Cricket).

Opinel Knives (I just don't get, and yes I do own one).

Tanto's (I've got a bunch of them but just can't warm up to em).

Lanyard holes on the opposite end of the pocket clip. (so if you want to use it to facilitate getting it out of your pocket, it has to be its "desired length hanging out of your pocket" + the length of the knife body. :grumpy:

Phrede

Chisel grinds
Any tip Thats not a tanto(I like straight edges, even if it means I have to have more than one- no curves!)
Serrations- though I do like veff serrations...
Any coating other than black...
Crappy painted coatings
Chinese knives
Knives under 3.5in
Micarta
Disproportional knives
Any leatherman other than the original multi-tool- sorry wave lovers
Swiss army

As always... There's more, just can't think right now
