What knife to carry while jogging/running?

Wow. I can't believe that you haven't had a shred of common sense in this whole thread. I don't get it. You are a runner, and have obviously never had a lick of knife training. How about "keep running"?

Hasn't anyone ever told you people that a knife is NOT a weapon?

What kind of scenario do you people have in your minds? You're running along and a baddie appears. What's he got, a knife or a gun? You think the guy is going to chase you with a knife waving around in the air? How "in shape" do you think muggers are? If he has a gun, WTF are you going to do with your knife besides gently handing it to him? You go so far as to think that a bigger knife is better for that extra 3/8" more "range"?

Un@#$%ing believable.

The only un@#$%ing believable post here was yours.

Who the hell ever said that the knife was only for SD? I carry mine for clearing out small brush, branches and vines that get in my way or wrapped around my feet.

I've been approached twice while running and neither time needed or even thought of taking out the knife I had with me.

Whenever I run I just clip a Kershaw OD-2 into my running shorts. The clip is tight, it doesn't fall out, and lightweight.

You may be running too slow. :D

The OP is VERY specific about his intended use of a knife. One answer, about the 5th post or so, suggested "keep running", and I overlooked that. I should have said that he had had one correct answer up until my first post. I acknowledged and agreed with carrying a knife with every step we take, in case you missed that.

Few things are as ridiculous as carrying a knife for self defence. It's illegal, and everyone should know that. Maybe this forum doesn't understand the implications of carrying a knife for self defence, and that's unfortunate. That is my point. A knife is not a weapon, run. If you are a runner anyway, that goes double. That should be ingrained into anyone who carries a knife, and certainly every knife enthusiast.

If your feathers got ruffled by my first post, that's too bad. If you think I'm wrong, google "Knife Rights". If you are a knife enthusiast, you should probably consider joining, and learn the unavoidable politics behind your right to carry a knife.

Been a member since '08 and would hope everyone else here is a member as well.

There are many things more ridiculous than a knife for self defense (I present to you the "Shake Weight").

After all the knife is one of man's first tools AND weapons, even before the sword came around. That said I don't carry or usually advocate carrying a knife for anything other than utility. Clearly you're presenting the sole reasonable view here...

HUGE RUNNER HERE!
Just wanted to say that just so you knew I wasn't just saying stuff just to post something. I run quite a bit. My knife of choice: pepper spray. I love knives, but I have never come to a situation where a pepper spray wouldn't have been just as good, or dare i say it... better! I guess I don't know your path so maybe you do need a knife, but if your running along and a dog chases after you (which is probably the most common "attack" on runners) the last thing you want to do is knife a families pet. Even if it was self defense it's better just to disable it for long enough to escape. If your worried about a robber or someone attacking you pepper spray works on them too. However, if that is the case, I would say a taser would be even better than a knife (as even if there a thief you might not want to have to kill someone).
Best of luck to you, good luck with your running, and God Bless!

Hey all,

I understand the concern about carrying a knife as a defensive weapon, which is a mistake on my part when I chose to say "a knife for defensive purposes". I am a firm believer in the "a knife is a tool first, and a weapon only when it needs to be" mentality, and I will run, and have run at the signs of trouble before.

My original intent when I said "defensive blade" was against animals because I enjoy trail running, not really people. Pepper spray didn't come to mind honestly when I was looking for defense against animals, but I will definitely pick up a canister.

I like a knife on me at all times because it is best to have when not need when need it when you do not have it.

So allow me to re-edit my first post, and change to " looking for a knife that would be best suited for carry while running"

My apologies.

Great advice! I find some peoples' fixation on knife as SD weapon somewhat childish. Being attracted to some cool shiny weapons, emaging yourself Bruce Lee...
There are certainly some other ways not to gent into or even get out - without maning lawers and sergiouns even wealthier (not that they would mind)...
But unfortunately these other ways are not coold at all! That is a serious drawback, no use to deny that unfortunate flaw.

My sister walks 5 miles a day in the early morning. Her neighborhood is "good" but that means less than it once did. I just recently bought her two Spyderco Natives. I got the ones with pink handles as she participates in walks to obtain funds for breast cancer research and Speyderco contributes to the cause with part of the price for these models.

Why two? If she should be grabbed there is a fair chance at least one arm and hand may be sufficiently free to open and employ her knife. I have her practice drawing with both left and right hands individually and simultaneously. I also give her instruction on how to use them to break contact and get away from an aggressor.

Has she got a pepper spray or some kind of electroshock weapon already?
Are these legal in your area?
Do you think she would be better off with two Spyderco Natives - by just pissing off the agressor?

Stun guns and pepper spray will not clear the occasional vine or blackberry bush branch that invades the trail of my cool down walk trail after my running.

Thank you Eric, especially, and also thank you to the rest of you gentlemen for coming out in support of my position.

I am sorry for being so incensed in my original post, but I do feel strongly about the good of the community here, and knife enthusiasts everywhere. I have had the very good fortune to have many "knife" friends around the world, and we can not afford to squander our rights that we are blessed with in this country. This is the largest group of knife folks that I know of, and as such, we should be leading the way to responsible knife use, and practices.

That's all the soapboxing I can stand. Thank you for your understanding and patience with an old man. Keep your knives on you at all times, and keep em sharp.

won't she, like most decent human beings be hesitant to use it because she may take the life of another person. wouldn't she be better off with pepper spray or a stun gun that she knows won't kill him and that is MUCH easier to use, and that god forbid some attacker got it away from her he couldn't use it to kill her with? If the object here is to get away safely and quickly a knife seems like a pretty poor choice.

The fact that she carries 2 knives and trains/practices shows she has the mindset to protect herself.
Pepper spray and electronic devices do not work well on a small percentage of people. Those are the ones that usually attack. The crazy and those on drugs!
A poor choice would be to feel safe in a "safe" place.

Over the years, I've walked less and less around my suburban neighborhood. Free-roaming dogs - including pitbulls, German shepherds, and dobermans - have taken over some of the upper streets. What was wrong with having retrievers and collies as big dog pets? I even carried a pocketed revolver - for a while. The knowledge that I'd likely go to jail for dispatching someone's Fido with a gun while he had me in his jaws in the street may have caused that. It may be that with all of me in my walking shorts, there just isn't room. I still carry a pocket knife - from a Spydie Native to a Vic SAK 'Farmer' - just because I like having a 'tool'. Maybe I'll whittle me a good walking stick... it beats sitting here on my butt in front of this PC all morning!

Actually, I changed my route - all flat - two plus blocks of the street in front of my house - back and forth - boring - but safe. Stay out of 'Harm's Way'. Still - I'll carry a little folder - SS so I won't add character too rapidly - not too expensive, should I lose it. I thought about a neck knife - but the big dogs had me trying to find a better sheath than the one that came with my BM 171 'BladeSport' Chopper... then there was the chain necklace required... I think the route change was appropriate.

The big thing is the excercise... if I don't get back to it, my 63rd hatchday celebration, in less than two weeks, may be my last. The problem really is personal responsibility - taking care of one's pets - especially those that roam around freely while having the friendly nature of a grenade with a loose pin. I never worried while hiking in The Smokies... I do while walking my streets.

I'd carry the same one I carry when riding my bike. Spyderco Pacific Salt.

I bought these, The darker one for myself as I like to play with my edges and the serated for my girlfriend who is an EMT, She is happy as it always cuts, and does not upset the gen population when drawn.

I carry the darker one, as I run during low light most of the time and it does not upset people. Usually they do not notice it if the knife is open - as there is plenty of knife crime in South Africa it is not wise to display, so I keep it tucked away on the waist elastic of my shorts and it will not embarrass me by draging my shorts down. also the rust factor as my sweat is pure acid, for defense a small can of mace- usually statistics of multiple attackers.
