• Happy Thanksgiving to all of you! I hope that you all have something to be grateful for this year and for many years to come
  • America has reached 250 years, and I am grateful to be here, in the best country in the world. Thank every one of you who helps make this country a better place, those who have gone before and risked it all, and those who've paid the ultimate price to make the United States what we are today.

Happy Birthday America! Let Freedom Ring for all time!

what knives do you bring camping/hiking

SAK outrider. necker (by me). the first knife I forged which is my EDC (4.5 blade, 5160. 19th century clip point style).

That's all EDC, anyway.

For hiking i'll add stuff- generally a larger blade and a hawk or axe. this is day hiking, or a fast and light overnight in the lowlands.

SAK Camper is the only knife I carry when doing long distance hiking. When camping/hunting etc I add a Mora to that (either store bought or one I handled). If I am canoing/kayaking/fishing I take my Grohmann #3 (only stainless straight blade I own). If I'm not going far or staying long I bring my little old hatchet. If camping for awhile I take my no name GP bush axe and usually a bucksaw. If at the camp: 16" Poulin chainsaw.

Usually a SAK with a Multi tool backup. Sometimes a fixed blade accompanies me, and those are varied. Standby has been a pilot's survival knife from Camillus or Ontario.

Between 1 nad 4 of these cutting tools. I usually have a Leatherman PST 2 as well.

My current favorite is the Fehrman Shadow Scout.

I work my way up based on duration and distance.

Always: SAK Outrider
Most of the time: Koster Nessmuk
Sometimes: Ranger RD9/Tramontina/Snow & Neally Pen Bay Hatchet, depending on mood.

But man I've been eyeing a Fallkniven A1. It's just a little too tactical looking for me or I'd be all over it.

Isn't the Outrider nice, though?

I aboslutely agree! I have a few and after seeing the Micarta scales (who was that?) added, that may make me orgasmic:eek:

Great collection to choose from perksy! I continue to find myself drawn to the Bravo-1 and I'm having a horizontal (ala Bear:jerkit:) sheath done up...

ROCK6

Last time I went out, I had a Grohman #4, a leatherman blast, and my wetterlings that I BROKE!, man didnt that suck, had my girl friend and a few of her friends out for a overnighter, stuck my axe in a pine and wrnched on the handle and cracckk, my own fault but you should have seen the look on my face.

ROCK6, in your chosen line of work, that's a good idea!..."I carry the extra weight purely for the physical conditioning...doesn't everyone?" :D

It's interesting to note that almost everyone has either a SAK or a multi-tool in their hiking/camping/hunting combos. I'd lay odds that they're the ones that get used the most while out! I certainly know it's that way for me!

I like my Vicotrinox SAK Farmer that Scibeer added the scissors to, and the Breeden 4" Pathfinder that's on its way to me will become one of my favorite fixed-blade choices for getting out on the trail.

I always have a SAK Rucksak in a Ziplock bag in my backpack with many other handy items (some tape, cleenex, lighter, cordage, etc). If I am going to be arround ropes at all (climbing, canyons or whatever) I carry a Spyderco Rescue Wave handy. If I am in a day hike and I don't plan on making fire but just some food prep, I take my biggest Opinel. Fire involved, folding saw and F1/Aurora/RAT-7/CanadianCamp.. whatever I feel like carrying.

If I take a hatchet too, then this:

... if not, then this:

I also EDC a Leatherman Charge TTi, so that's with me in the woods too.

They're so small and easy to carry, I don't know why someone wouldn't have one every time they went out. To be honest, I think I've used the actual knife blade on my outrider once or twice at most. The most used tool on it is the scissors.

A lot of ultralight backpackers only carry a SAK.

.... but I'm still taking a medium fixed blade with me.

I use the blade on my outrider once in a while. usually as an extra camp kitchen blade. Most used is scissors, then probably bottle opener, phillips, tweezers, saw, corkscrew.

I think if I made a nessmuk like blade or a wharncliffe blade to replace it with I'd be happiest.

On camping trips I take my Gerber LMF II, Ka Bar Kukri, Leatherman Wave, and a Case tiny trapper for small stuff. Oh yea and my cheap home depot hatchet.

I usually have a FFBM strapped to my pack with a Beefy folder (usually a Manix) and a small fixed blade (gossman, may, etc) in a tool steel. Sometimes I carry a saw, axe or Khukri just depends. I like the knives pictured here though.

Oh and I have a multi-tool for sure and a sak somewhere in there! cant forget those lil guys.

Well now that's what I am trying to figure out right now;)

I'm going camping and backpacking for about 4 days this weekend.

I have it narrowed down;)

This is for sure going:

Then for a fixed blade it is either:

Or number 3 or 4 Nessmuk here:

Or one of these 2

To be honest the Skookum and the Stripey Nessmuk are the top contenders.

Hard not to take the Skookum. Love everything about it.
