what knives do you bring camping/hiking

Small SAK, Opinel No. 8 and a Mora 740.

Sometimes I will exchange the Mora 740 for a E. Jonsson Mora with a 3.5 inch blade.

...If I'm with the Scouts then fixed blades are a no-no, so I usually have my SAK OHT and a Spyderco Military, and maybe my LM Wave, Spyderco Native or Spyderco CF Dyad, if I happen to have them on me...

I still don't understand why Scouts are not allowed to carry and use fixed blades. Please, don't tell me that it is just by the looks because nothing screams more tactical/look-what-I-have-here/deadly-weapon-looks than an Spyderco Military (no ofense, I really like that knife and it is in my list no mater what). A fixed blade can't fold on your fingers, it is stronger and has a better grip. If I had to chose between an Opinel and an F1 (single blade knives) I will surely go with the F1. I am sure this is a well discussed matter in BF but seems like I never found the right answer.

I'm going to try this combo when I get home this time:

Victorinox Farmer SAK
Breeden Knives 4" Pathfinder
Mora 510 (great for food prep!)
Case 6244SS or Vintage Knives Model 1902 Moose (or both! :D)

And my small camp axe.

Last time I went for a day hike, I carried my SAK Farmer, my VK Model 1902 Moose and my Mora 510. Great working combo!

Yesterdays day hike...carried way too many...but...I can't help it. I like my knives!:o

BRKT PSK around my neck
Leatherman Charge in my pocket
BRKT Nebula on my hip
Cold Steel Trail Hawk in my pack

I always carry something a little different, but the Nebula is a pretty consistent choice of mine.

Mikel_24,

Preaching to the choir, bro. I disagree with this policy and have been pretty vocal about it. I read in one of the forums that BSA does not have a written policy about fixed blades, but individual camps can specifically say "no fixed blades." Just repeating what I heard, so it is not the gospel truth.

When I'm out with just my Troop I usually bring a fixed blade, but I don't bring them to camps because all of the ones I have attended have specifically stated "no fixed blades."

I think their worried about young, impressionable and not-always-thinking-clearly young men turning all Johnny Rambo on each other. I certainly think that fixed blades are considerably safer than folding knives, although I EDC folders and not fixed blades. I have also heard that the preference for folders is because they can always have the folder with them, but may not have that 12 inch hollow handled "survival" boat anchor with them. Maybe it's just convenience and making it easier for young men to "Be Prepared."

Just my rambling thoughts. YMMV.

SPOOKY- is that a green farmer??????? If so, you got a source? I thought there was only red, blue, and silver... Of which I have all, and 2 reds.

Spoken like a true addict! :D I have visions of you clutching your terminal and screaming into it! :D I just ordered some blue ones from REI myself...

I will usually bring something in each of these classes:
Vic Farmer or Huntsman
Spyderco Caly Jr. or CS Trailguide
SR Bandicoot or Fehrman Peacemaker or Gossman Nessmuk
Busse Steelheart or CS Trailmaster

It depends upon whether I'm hiking or camping as to what the combo is, and whether or not I go with a larger one.

Vic: my trusty old Farmer
BRKT: Fox River (A. G. Russell version)
R.A.T. Cutlery: RC-4
Koster/K9: Bushcraft (3V), Nessmuk, and waiting impatiently for my Dingo
Swamp Rat: Chopweiler, Ratweiler, Ratmandu
Scrapyard: Dogfather
Busse: Fusion Battle Mistress, HellRazor, SARSquatch, SAR5, Steel Heart, Fusion Steel Heart (usually the HH version, although I've got a HOG or Heavy Ordnance version that needs some woodstime), Paul's Hatchet, Basic 7, Basic 9, Satin Jack (old style), Active Duty, Leaner Meaner, and a Cultellus for light work

The heaviest work usually requires: Gransfors Brux axe (various), Fusion or Fat Fusion Battle Mistress, Dogfather, BRKT Golok, and/or Busse AK-47. But I'm not so involved in the heavier forms of camping at my age.

I could also use a Fiddleback. Just getting to know Andy ... but haven't had any spare $$ since Blade!

I would happily carry any of my HI khuks, my Ritter, and any number of my Benchmade/Spyderco/Kershaw folders -- they just aren't my 'standard package.' Guess I'm way too focused on fixed blades.

Mind you, I don't usually bring them all out at one time. Usually. :D

Typical package is 4 or 5 from the heavy end down to the light end. A big family outing might see 80% of them packed up and ready to go.

As of late I carry my
RAT 1 folder
RAT 3 or Benchmade 190 hunter modified by me
SOG powerlock
SAK huntsman

I carry three knives. it depends on how far and how remote the trip is. For short trips it is a Spyderco Delica, Leatherman Wave, and a Buck 110 or my old Schrade Uncle Henry. For long trips it is a Delica, SAK Farmer, Gerber 800 multitool and a 3 inch fixed blade. Could be a Tops scout, Buck Woodsman, Tops Carolina Skinner, or one of many Moras. Hope to get a RAT 3 OD-orange when they come out. All are carired on my belt or in a pocket.
