what knives do you bring camping/hiking

I think I took some 'favorite user' pics a while back...

And soon this little guy, though it's only been used in the kitchen so far and has developed a nice patina:

Hard to say. I'll always carry a small fixed blade, sometimes a Tommipuukko, sometimes a Fällkniven F1, sometimes a Busse Game Warden. Most often I'll take a larger knife or an axe to go along with it, with my current favourites being the Busse FFBM and Ranger Knives RD9. On occasion, I will carry only my SAK Ranger or no blade at all just for the sake of doing and practicing that. No other folders for me, though.

Well now that's what I am trying to figure out right now;)

I'm going camping and backpacking for about 4 days this weekend.

I have it narrowed down;)

Then for a fixed blade it is either:

This one is real nice bro !!!!

The last time I checked what I had while hiking this was it.....

The Dumpster Mutt is often swapped with my Bandicoot though !

If I'm Camping I would also take my ChopWeiler...

Those chopwielers are sweet... I always havea farmer, and fixed blade when I hike. It varies. I have thinned out my blades alot lately:(, Just trading round, and tryin differant stuff.... I have a few that will be stayin forever though....

I am lovin my hikers backup, paired with a farmer, and a larger fixed blade in my pack. Usually its just the farmer and a small fixed blade though.

SPOOKY- is that a green farmer??????? If so, you got a source? I thought there was only red, blue, and silver... Of which I have all, and 2 reds.

Pit,

The blade is only 3.25" so I usually don't take it on overnights but it gets a heck of a lot of use at home.

The only thing is the D2 is fairly hard steel so I usually use that diamond plate sharpener to sharpen it instead of the water stone. The plate has leather on back with green abrasive compound in it.

Case Medium Texas Jack: In my pocket everyday

Frost's Mora, rehandled by me: Taken whenever I leave civilization; hiking/camping/fishing/etc.

I don't get all the tools on the Squirt.

The scissors are...so so. vic does better, IMO. the tweezers are *great*, and I understand the file and the knife blade. Though the knife is horrible. might be better as a wharncliffe, but I swear the thing has tried to close on me cutting string.

The bottle opener works well once you grind out the proper dimension.

But that leaves what looks to *me* like 2 small screwdriver blades that doe pretty much the same thing. What is it? is one supposed to be an awl or a half phillips?

I'd carry my squirt more if the scissors worked better and the tools selection was ... different.

My Squirt has the pliers, not the scissors. I use them regularly, and the punch is handy. For scissors, I have the SAK Classic.

I haven't been camping since I've joined the forums, but for short hikes I take:

or RC IZULA prototype

It all depends on how far out I'm going and whether its camping or just a hike. For hiking its the Active Duty or Game Warden, the S1 for fishing or being out on the water, and the Busse ASH-1 LE for camping.

my in town EDC includes a LM crunch. I definitely use pliers all the time. The squirt looked like something handy to toss in the first aid kit when I bought it

I guess the last time I went camping I only had the Byrd Cara Cara. I almost always take my Mora SS clipper and it's usually the only one I use. It's like a extension of my right hand.

Just about every day I carry my Buck 110 and my Victorinox Super Tinker, and that's usually all I carry when doing a day hike.

When camping I'll add my Spyderco Endura, or a Pacific Salt, just to have a light-weight one-hand-folder as a backup for my Buck.

And if I'm fishing I have my Spyderco Rescue and my Victorinox Cybertool in my tackle-box.

I believe in the "leave no trace" policy when camping, so I don't carry saws or choppers with me (no axes, hatchets, hawks, machetes, etc...).
And in all of my thirty-plus years of camping I've never once needed to chop or saw any wood....I have done so in the past (too many times), but looking back I can see that it was really un-necessary and just spoiled the area for others.

I don't have picture functionality yet, but here is what I take most often.

Folder: SAK Trekker
Fixed Blade: Fallkniven S1 or F1, Shing Bushcraft, or one of the two Landi knives coming this summer.
Saw: Gerber folding saw.

I don't usually take any large fixed blades as a I rarely use them, I just like their looks.

It all depends on what I'm doing:

If I'm with the Scouts then fixed blades are a no-no, so I usually have my SAK OHT and a Spyderco Military, and maybe my LM Wave, Spyderco Native or Spyderco CF Dyad, if I happen to have them on me.

If I'm out with the family then I usually pack a Mora (usually a 2000 or Clipper), Military and SAK OHT (which lives in my survival fanny pack so is always with me no matter what). Sometimes I also take a Fiskars hatchet or sliding saw, which are both lightweight and tough, but I rarely need them. I like the saw for shelter contruction.

If I'm by myself then it's usually my Mora 2000 on my hip, Military in my right pocket, OHT in the fanny pack up front, and sometimes my sliding saw in my pack. All lightweight and useful. Once I figure out how to sharpen better then I'll take out my Kershaw Outcast.
