What knives do you think are not worth the cost?

When the knife is $80 or more and has AUS-8 I usually don't even finish reading about the knife anymore.

From a logical stand point, most of my knives are not worth the cost. I have a $20 closeout special with an s30v blade that cuts as well, or better than just about all my knives.

Striders, they are OK, but absolutely not worth the insane price tag.

But also Fällknivens which I regard as one of the best European knives tend to be a bit overpriced these days after their sudden 30% (!!!!) increase last year. I mean salaries are getting lower, stock market has plummetted, economy is getting worse every day yet Fällkniven decided to raise their prices by 30%. That is insane too.

It's all personal I suppose. I guess anything I'm not buying or do not intend on buying
in my eyes is not worth the cost.

I will say though that there are some blades that truly are not worth it. Like those
SWAT folders. They cost around 30 to 40 bucks and for that price you can get a
Spyderco Tenacious or a Kershaw Scallion/Chive which are FAR SUPERIOR. Or you
could get a Byrd knife for even LESS and it's way better. SWAT knifes are a prime
example of an overpriced blade.

Haha, I do have one though, but I got it free as part of a promotion.

You're right. Spyderco and Kersahw have put a serious dent in the cheap knife or knock off business by manufacturing some serious knives for under $40! No kidding. They were very smart to do that and let's just hope the not so serious knife consumers learn what they can get for their hard earned money. I can't see paying even $15 for a cheap knock off anymore with the offerings of these two fine companies.

+1

With the numerous <$50 Kershaw models and the Tenacious, not to mention the Byrd lineup, the number of high quality affordable knives has increased. Good steel, excellent quality.

I would agree that fixed blade knives with cord-wrapped handles are a way to "cheat" the customer by minimizing material costs.

-Unless the cost is adjusted significantly from a properly-handled equivalent.

CRK, Strider, some Spydercos, BM gold class, TOPS, RAT, Busse, more, but I'm a little out of it on meds

STRIDER, STRIDER, STRIDER.. $400 for SNG and $500 for SMF... Sorry just not worth it PERIOD!!, much less the customs that are in the $2000 to $3000 dollar range.. Thats just stupid, its hard to respect any company that does that.. Some of the high end Cold steel knives are overpriced as well.. Benchmade and Spyderco has couple also.. Basically anything over $200 is ludacris.. Microtech is in the same boat as Strider.. Lets not forget Dark "Dork" Ops
I think Mr. Emerson does it right... Great value to top notch product.. but thats just me... Spyderco does it right also, but they do have a few that are borderline..

On the other hand the Spyderco Tenacious is pound for pound the best all round knife value PERIOD!!! IMO

I'm probably going to get flamed but IMO most Spyderco's cost too much.

Especially the Lava and Poliwog. Even though these are 2 knives that I would LOVE to own, I'm just not willing to pay ~$100 each for such small knives.

I think this is in the eye of the beholder.

There are folks who do not bat an eye at paying $1500 + , there are folks who wouldnt pay over a hundred and those who seriously need quality , budget knives.

The sayings 'You get what you for ' and 'you are paying for a name ' come to mind here.
Are the Wranglers at Target any worse than the ones from Cowboy Barn ? They are both jeans that serve the purpose but one is fancier than the other ( and costs more) , although not too many folks have safe queen jeans.. lol :)
Hope what I'm tryin to say came across.

There are knives I would love to own , just because I love the way they look and feel , Strider comes to mind , but at this road in my life I cannot justify paying that much for any knife. ( moving into a 'new to me' house pretty soon ) priorities,priorities,priorities..

It's been said twice already, but I will say it again
SOG = overpriced garbage (for the most part).

I also think Cold Steel thinks a little too highly of itself as reflected in the prices.

I disagree, I don't think that is what this thread is about. Not being able to afford or justify spending a certain amount of money on a knife is completely different from not thinking that that particular knife is worth its asking price.

I certainly cannot afford to buy a Sebenza right now, but I think it is worth the ~$400. If I could afford it I would buy one.

I don't think the Spyderco Lava is worth its ~$90 price tag. I could buy one, I even want one, but I'm not willing to pay that much for it.

I like my Buck 882 and think it's a pretty decent knife for most uses but it is over priced. My buddy originally paid $70.00 then let me have it for $50. It is worth just about what I paid for it but any more then that is not good! If Buck would have priced these more reasonable and been more consistant on the liner locks they would have sold very well I believe. My 882 is pretty good on it's liner lock but the other three(including the G-10 model) I examined were not too my liking! I think mine was a latter production model.

a lot of microtechs are waaaaaaaaaay overpriced. they make good stuff, don't get me worng, but there's not that much money or time put into those knives for them to cost that friggin much. their Katana series is a joke

Wood inlay Sebenzas. I just can't figure it out. Why does an inlay of wood that cost about $2 in materials command up to one hundred dollars more than a micarta inlay? They don't even use the best quality wood.

i'm new, sorta. but the RAT Izula. I just don't get it.

I'm with you as far as I prefer the Becker BK-11 over the Izula, but I am in a very small minority.

The Izula is a very good knife and is not heinously priced, personal preference comes into play.

Chuck
