What knives do you think are not worth the cost?

Everything that's not custom/or using expensive materials that costs over €200 is just not worth it to me.

Nothing mass produced should cost that much unless expensive materials are used. And even then it'd better be seriously decked out.

I agree.

I don't think that any production knife is worth more than $200.00 dollars.

Now a custom made one-of-a-kind knife.....the sky's the limit!

I am not happy with KA-BAR and KA-BAR Becker knives as all of them I own have some blemish on them. I returned one and they sent another slightly less blemished replacement : (

Also the KA-BAR Becker BK9 has completely failed for a few users.

Pretty sad quality control in my opinion as you can get a $10 cheaper than dirt rough use knife that has no flaws and out performs the KA-BAR Becker knives this day. Also a Cold Steel $15 machete will put it to shame in all ways.

I do not trust the KA-BAR Becker BK9 and will probably sell the Becker knives I own on Craigs List soon.

The Busse Game Warden falls in this category for me. Don't get me wrong, the knife was an excellent knife. For the $200.00+ I paid for the knife then another $90.00 for a sheath. I found my self wondering why I did it? I had several BM Snody's and a couple of BRKT's in the same size range that did just as well as the GW and cost a fraction as well as came with a sheath. I have other Busse's that I really enjoy and would never want to be without, as for the Game Warden I ended up selling it.

:)

+1

With the numerous <$50 Kershaw models and the Tenacious, not to mention the Byrd lineup, the number of high quality affordable knives has increased. Good steel, excellent quality.

back to topic, SOG, some Emersons tend to be overpriced for me. SOG has dome interesting desgns that I would like to use, but their costs are just ridiculous for me at times. Emerson is the same. Maybe both companies can take a hint from the two makers mentioned in the quote.

I think a lot of Case knives are overpriced. Don't get me wrong, I love Case, but $80 for a slipjoint with just plain old surgical SS?

I disagree, I don't think that is what this thread is about. Not being able to afford or justify spending a certain amount of money on a knife is completely different from not thinking that that particular knife is worth its asking price.

I certainly cannot afford to buy a Sebenza right now, but I think it is worth the ~$400. If I could afford it I would buy one.

I don't think the Spyderco Lava is worth its ~$90 price tag. I could buy one, I even want one, but I'm not willing to pay that much for it.

you know what , you're right ! I didnt get the jist until now , I guess maybe I should'nt multi-task at work when one of the tasks is reading BF :P

I would agree with the poster who said the Polliwog is overpriced is spot on. I've coveted one since they came out but after handing one at a local knife shop I couldnt justify the price... maybe one day though.

The irony of this thread is that IT DOESN'T MATTER WHAT YOU THINK. Clearly the companies are selling their products to others and that is how they established their price point.

if it doesn't matter what we, the consumers, think, they why do models end up discontinued or companies go out of business? Wait, they don't have money trees on their property, they have to make models we want at prices we're willing to pay?

Personally, I don't get the high prices for some of the rarer spydercos (I have about 10 of the less expensive models and about 6 byrds). Strider folders are really cool lookin' but I would think they are worth a max of $100.00. Perhaps most of the buyers are buying for the military (with the military's cash?).

An interesting thread...

To respond to a few personal preferences, I think Emersons and the Izula are unbelievable values for what you get. I guess it's different for everyone, but I was surprised to see those two names pop up...

Different for everyone I guess.

Exactly. However, I'm noticing many folks ragging on very popular companies and brands. Clearly a bunch of folks in this thread are out of line with the broader consumer knife buying masses out there.

Lets face it this thread is just a magnet for every disgruntled person out there and allowing them to air whatever beef they want and chalk it up to - how silly others are to pay that much for a knife. The thread isn't contributing to any really good discussion on any particular knife, its merits or objective criticisms of design. Just the kind of venting you'd find in W&C.

Anything I want but can't afford.

Seriously though:
High end Cold Steel stuff

That was me too, so I guess we're on the same page :cool:

Strider and Busse are sharpened crowbars with horrible balance. Busse's handles are somewhat better though, never held a Strider that felt good. Strider's custom stuff is pure crap. I like what Busse is doing with Swamp Rat, and think their waki is a good deal.

Cold Steel can suck the third nut if they think I'm gonna pay more than $100 for anything made overseas, and it's sickeningly egotistic of them to charge custom prices for any of their "high end" production knives.

Add some more to the list:
-Some discontinuwd Spydercos
-SOG Architech
-Emersons seem to be somewhat over priced

A couple I think are somewhat overpriced:

Spyderco Urban - Spyderco is probably my favorite production knife company, and I really like the design of this little slippie, but $150 MSRP? I just don't think so.

Cold Steel Sisu - Its a pretty little knife, but even in San Mai III steel its just not worth the $400 MSRP.

Now, I'm not dissing these two knives as I think they are both very nice, I just think the price on both if more than they are worth. Drop the price, and I would be all over both of these.

You do know most stores don't sell at MSRP? The spyderco Urban sells for $90 at NGK.

Garbage like Dark Ops.

My dad was a graphic artist during my childhood, and I learned from a young age how to filter out the bulls***. He learned a lot about communications, and from that, he taught me that 60-70% of most ad copy is 'fluff' - using 20 words when 4-5 would do.

Reading Dark Ops' ad copy reminds me of shoveling out livestock bins when I lived in Montana.

I won't criticize an expensive knife, simply because I can't (or choose not to) afford it, but I thinks it's ridiculous the way some knives are priced, based on nothing more than hype.

thx - cpr
