What Makes a Good, Traditional Barlow?

I believe Boker makes a good traditional Barlow, and I hold Brian Fixall largely responsible for my addiction to them.
Now I’m proud to say, I own a couple beautiful examples from his collection. Thanks Brian.

Definitely one of the best combos - really hard to beat.


Thanks to Mark ( Ramrodmb ), I was able to add another to the GEC Barlow bolster lineup. Unless I am mistaken, I am only missing a Tidioute #25 Barlow (with the lined bolster) to showcase the patterns and bolster variations that GEC has used in their Barlows so far. (Also, not counting any Northwoods "Barlows")

I can not match my friend Pàdruig 's photo quality but I will show all of the GEC Barlow Bolster varieties that I have anyhow . I believe that this is all . If there is another one , please show it .

Very nice, Harry. You've nailed it with that bunch. I do not believe GEC has another Barlow Bolster style or pattern that they have used on a Barlow. The only exceptions would be Northwoods knives but I don't really consider them to be GECs.

Here are some of my barlows. I don’t have many in my collection as I did not pursue them for many years. I normally prefer stockmans and whittlers but these 2 blades are my favorite in the collection.

Vintage Russell...I know this isn't the genuine Russell, but still makes it a great traditional barlow. Makes you wonder how/when these were commissioned or if they were simply faked without permission...
