What Makes a Good, Traditional Barlow?

Beautiful Kabar you have there.
Only on the outside 🤣

Was sorting through a few acquisitions from the past couple months and decided to clean up this New York Knife Co barlow. I had to put new edges on it because the old ones were chipped up from rust and I didn't want to risk further damage.

But I noticed that the tang stamp reads only "NEW YORK" on both blades. Nothing on the back of the tangs. The bolsters are stamped with the typical N and arrows compass that I've seen on a number of NYKC barlows.

Anyone ever come across this tang stamp before?

Nice example of a hard to find barlow, I have never seen one just marked New York, it looks legit, maybe Charlie has seen this before.
Definitely seen it before!! I've had at least one;NYKBarlows1.jpgNYKBarlows1Tangs.jpgI think they may pre-date the Hammer Brands!!

This is a Barlow that I believe was made by Queen ( WRONG ) that used the ARROW on the Bolster which I think is different than what Tuna Valley uses ???? and way different than RUSSELL . Tang Stamp is Cripple Creek
Edited to add : Made by Cripple Creek but not by Bob Cargill !!!!
Edited again : I guess it may have been made by Queen for Cripple Creek in Effingham /// I can for sure tell you it is a well made Barlow and I am glad to have it .

This is the 100 Year Commemorative RUSSELL Barlow made by Schrade in 1975 next to a Schrade Filagree . If you look real close at the Delrin ??? covers , the dimples are all the same .

Two more Russell Commemoratives . Top one made by COLONIAL and the bottom one made by probably Boker for Green River .

This is an original Russell with the Boker

Harry

I had one of those Schrades orange handle barlows for years. I received it as a gift when I was about 10.

My second oldest daughter always loved it and I was able to buy her one off eBay a few years back. When she moved out she left it here with some other stuff. Some how it vanished.

Well when she was visiting this last November I decided to give her my old one. Figured it was time someone got as much enjoyment out of it as I did. Still a lot of life in that old knife.

Winchester Barlow was my first knife of said pattern. Love the checkered bone! Despite its origin, those are current "official" Winchesters, so I guess it might appear in this thread.

First time I have seen that Winchester!! Nice!! Is it wood, or molded??

That checkering is gorgeous.
Thanks! Love it myself.

Thank you! It's a bone. That checkering with a line across imitates a classic wooden gunstock texture. From Winchester's current "Collector's Edition Pocketknives" line.
