What Makes a Good, Traditional Barlow?

A Schrade Cut. Co. (S.C. Co. Walden) that was a rust bucket when I got it about 8 years back. Cleaned it up and she still has much authority in her snaps. I always wonder about these old knives when I get them. I think this one might have been left in someone's old metal tackle box. I didn't want to try to make it look too fancy. This knife would still do some hard work. 😊

Nice one Rob, I think a lot of barlows end up sitting in a tool box or tackle box for decades, the Blue Gras I just posted had a fair amount of rust but no use. Bought at the hardware store and thrown in the tool box 60 years ago and sat in the basement, garage or shed.

What a beautiful barlow Mr P. Is the tang stamp the same on the secondary?

Thank you Dwight and they are the same tang stamps. 😊

Now that is a right handsome looking knife you have there.

Thank you DirtDawg. 😊

I agree with you John.😊 This one that I just posted was quite a bit more rusted than I normally buy, but, it did clean up good enough. Attached is one of the sale pics from when I acquired it. I got it back when the Barlow craze around here was in full swing and supply was drying up quick. 😊

Nice job! I have one like it, but just haven't gotten around to cleaning it up yet. The blades on mine look like someone went to work on them with a bench grinder, but it can be made into a nice user with a little work. It still has some good years left in it yet.

Yours looks like it will clean up quite easily. Looks pretty nice the way it is. 😊

Supply of good vintage barlows seems to be down even more now, rarely find a decent one anymore.

This Case Tested was my best unused rusted find, it was in a small gift box tied with string, looks to have been bought as a gift for someone and never opened, I only did a very light cleaning to stop further rusting, did not want to take away the history of the knife.

I thought that only applied to me now. Doesn't apply to "you know who". ;) 🤣
I heard there was a fine supply .................... somewhere around the Arkansas River. 🤣
Nice Case tested ........... very nice ! 😍

Looks like you found another really good one Dwight !😍
Might be your best find yet !:thumbsup: 😊

Steve ......... That is one beautiful Dogs head !😲😍

Thanks Dwight, it's factory stag.

Thank you Mr P. The spear blade has great snap and is tight however the pen has zero snap. But I didn't hesitate! :D

It's a reject then. Throw it in the "send to Primble reject box", along with that Cattaraugus Barlow .... the one with the pristine Spear. ;) I'll dispose of them properly.🤞🤣
Kinda rare to get a New York Knife with poor blade snap. 🤔 If one or the other has no snap, the pen would be the preferred one. Good lookin' example.😊

Thank you Jack.

Here's a beauty - 3 3/4" - Tang stamp is too far gone to decipher... Any theories of origin appreciatedView attachment 2004383View attachment 2004384View attachment 2004385View attachment 2004386
Absolutely gorgeous Barlow , sorry I'm new to posting so please excuse me for butting in 👍 ,very similar bolster to the Taylor eye witness, and the blade shape looks very much like a Sheffield style , i was told any unstamped ones could have possibly have been for sales men purposes and with no name it reduces the value but the beauty still speaks for itself 🖐️
