What Makes a Good, Traditional Barlow?

Micarta certainly isn't everybody's cup of tea (nor should it be...) but I like it on the Forum 2017 Barlow, all steel too and a grand long Sheepfoot that's correctly proportioned to the handle. Micarta hints at the sometimes austere, minimal aspect of the Barlow, it's certainly very tough stuff for any situation. So, may not be the Cat's miaow for everybody but it got the Cat paw treatment here 😻

The "Paw of Approval" 😺

I've wanted to see a granddaddy from GEC ever since I found out GEC existed! Alas I would never have a chance at one,but I love they're doing one.
Hopefully they’ll be out in the next couple of weeks at SMKW. I’m sure they’ll have plenty in store and probably on their website. If it’s like the last order they got. Should have a couple thousand ordered.

if they do, i hope they do a little better than a bigger 2 acorns barlow stamp 😂

more importantly, some serious snap, unlike the 97s
I thought strong snap, good W&T WAS what makes a good traditional Barlow :) It's interesting , all the Barlows I own from various manufacturers do have decent snap, maybe it's all that steel in the bolster.... so I think you won't be disappointed if you get one of those big Rems.

I really hope Boker decides to change the Expedition Barlows to integral with no shields, like the current Copper Integrals. Even so, I do love the Expedition series.

is your Böker comparable to GEC Barlows? (F&F, W&T,...)

I only have one #14 (and a #12), so others might be a better source for comparison. But, based on my samples:

Overall F&F on the Copper Integrals is just slightly better than my Expedition and my other Boker Barlows. I'd put the F&F of the Coppers pretty much even with my copies of the #12 and #14. My Boker Barlows blades range from centered to off center but not touching anything. My #12 is centered, #14 is slightly off center.

W&T on the Bokers range from really nice to a bit rough/ gritty and uneven. My #12 is also in the slightly rough and uneven scale. My #14 was from a forum member (JohnDF) and was used, it is the smoothest W&T. I have issues with breaking/ chipping/ splitting finger nails as I'm getting older, and I don't like gator snaps. Some of my Boker Barlows are not easy for me to open. Others are just right. My #14 is just right.

Hope that helps.
