What Makes a Good, Traditional Barlow?

Wonderful Duncan. Charlie has certainly done a great job with the Sheepsfoot, both in promoting the pattern, and in producing such a beautiful example. I liked the Sheepsfoot BEFORE, and I was still surprised at just how good the Sheepsfoot Charlow turned out.

Really sorry to hear about your Spearpoint, hope you find it my friend. Be sure to keep us all posted.

Jack

Nice words and pictures, Duncan - thank you!

Don't panic, I say! Your spearpoint will show up! My Tony Bose WT disappeared for months (I know how you feel), only to be handed to me by a sweetly smiling woman wrapped only in a towel!;)

I was elated the other day when I received a parcel in the post the other day, I finally got my a into g and ordered those gorgeous Sheepfoot Barlows.
I wasn't into with Sheepsfoot blades as a single and only blade - I think it was because I was very unfamiliar with them at that stage, but how things have changed, not only for me - Charlie has swept the nation with his enthusiasm and knowledge that I agree with Paul when he said Charlie will be remembered!
Heres why.....

What absolute gorgeous knives, the workmanship is superb, I for one love the etch on these knives-especially the Sheepsfoot.
Charlie my friend, thank you - thank you for everything on behalf of all of us.

Your Dads Walnut is gorgeous, and I appreciate the value of what has gone into these knives -but especially the Gunstock Walnut Charlows, The Gunstock walnut with it's origins - a small piece, but never-the-less a precious one.

When taking out my knives for photos I had this sickening feeling - and then it became a reality - my Ebony Spearpoint that I took all over England with me is gone! -4 hours of searching intensely has had me come out empty handed, I must have a good look at work - but my hopes are diminishing, when this sort of thing happens, I have to look at how many knives compared to how many I have queened and move on - so perhaps a horrible lesson for acceptance has visited me...

Beautiful set of Charlows, sorry to hear one has gone missing, hopefully it will turn up again for you, I sure would hate to have mine go missing.

i really like that sheepfoot. it was the standout for me when i saw the blade selections we had. just looks right to me with the handle and all.

Sorry to hear about your missing spear but my sorrow is mitigated by envy of your collection. :-( Can't find any in the States anymore... Outstanding pics.

Thank you guys for the commiserations on my loss lol, I hope the ol' girl does turn up - it's my favourite edc.
Keep an eye out here leogreg - the TC Barlows come up now and then - but you have to monitor the thread constantly - as they disappear very quickly as you would imagine.

Duncan my friend, I send you positive vibes so that your ebony spear will show up at work ;):)

Keep us updated...

No Long Pull...just nail nick now.

No Long Pull...just nail nick now.

Not JUST a nail nick, but a long, agonizing decision about what pulls to use. Took me more than a month to decide!!
These look like the old Uticas, and after drawing them with long pulls, they just suit the knife, esp. the two blader, much better!
I hope you like them - wait 'til you see them!!

Tom has grown up now, and become a farmer!!:D

Not this year, Dr.Scott.
GEC might put Stag on the UN*X*LD version, next year!?!?
Who knows??

The Farmers Barlow looks great, I think nail nicks is a good thing - we have the long pulls on the other knives, from what I see with the diagrams Sarah has so wonderfully provided, the knife looks good.

Stag would look just great!

Now thats some exciting stuff there P. Time table on these Charlie?

Yes, they really do. I tend to prefer the aesthetics of a long pull on most knives, but not on this one. Plus, there's nothing like a well-placed nail nick (and most nicks do lend themselves to good placement for leverage, ie, further towards the tip of a blade than a long pull tends to be).

I've been hoping for a clip blade with stag, and my personal preference is for nail nicks instead of long pulls. So 2 out of 3 ain't bad... There is no way I could resist these new Charlows. Can't wait!
