What Makes a Good, Traditional Barlow?

Sometimes Jigged Handles make a Good, Traditional Barlow! I did an informal count, and maybe 10% of the Barlows in my collection have jigged handles.
In this picture, you can see (from the bottom) a real nice Case Tested, a Clauss with jigged plastic (maybe Camillus), and a pocket-worn Schrade Cut Co.

If you have Jigged handled Barlows, I'd love to see them!

Those are pretty cool.

Sometimes shell-handles and 1075 steel make for a good, basic, and inexpensive working Barlow - old Imperial/Hammer Brand - both brands marked on the blades. OH

Note that none of the jigs that waynorth posted have long pulls... prelude to Jigged French Nick Spears and Razors?;-)

Heh! That wasn't intentional, but it is no less true!! A Portent of things to come!!

Meanwhile, more Jiggety Jigs!!

From the bottom, I thought i'd stick an oddball Case in here. They did this zig-zag jigging for a while, just for a change I guess. This model is 1/4" to 3/8" longer than a standard Barlow. That's a "step" bolster.
A "Razor", but I am not going to do the Razors just yet.
Next up, carved stag bone in a Tan, and in a Red. Unusual Jigging on those.
Last up, is genuine old Winterbottom jig bone. Queen had a few buckets of this old stuff. If you have seen their factory, you might understand how something could be lost in there for 40 or 50 years!! It finished up real nice!!

Ah, rats! Gave my dad a S&M barlow clad in their "goldenroot" bone, several years back, but don't have a photo! :o

Charlie,
That "tan carved stag bone" from Queen must have come from Series XI, did it not? That set Queen called "Peach Seed ' jigged bone, and my Barlow from that set looks nothing like yours. I wish I could lay my hands on her to post a comparison pic.

When you get a chance, I'd love to see it, Dave. I just bought that Schatt Barlow random, no box - not sure if it belongs to a set.

Here's one more pic of Jigged Handled Barlows:

I think the Henckels on the bottom, and the Burnt Chimney with the Greenbone were made by the same German maker.
The other three are Schrade Cutlery Co. Two peachseed, and one unusual jigging for a SCC.

The bottom Schrade is a beauty Charlie, nice chunky jigging, looks like a Gunstock Solingen knife I once owned.

I would love to know what era that Sheepsfoot with the peach-seed came from Charlie - awesome knife!

Those are some sweethearts there Charlie! I do like the jigging on the signature bolstered Schrade  And of course the peachseed!
That Schatt was buggin me, I knew I had something wrong, so I looked it up. The Barlow you have is from the 2001 set and Queen calls it 'Carved Peach Bone" not Peach Seed as I said before. If I ever get back home I'll get a pic and post her up!

Ah, Carved Peach Bone!!
Thanks for the info, Dave!

Duncan, Probably between WWI and WWII. That's as close as I can put it.
It has later Peachseed, but not the last iteration, so maybe 1930s.

I only own the one Barlow.. I will say that it is the nicest opening slippy that i own,the pulls are perfect (to me) on this sized knife...First class geometry (aesthetic and otherwise) and a good steel.....Nice slabs too!....Classic...... FES

How about that Green? The next run of TCs maybe?Wouldn't that be choice?
OK its 5.30 Saturday arvo-done three washes, taken the kids for a swim at the beach, picked the Mrs up from work, nearly time to start dinner. There's something missing.... I just can't put my finger on...something I want... something I would find refreshing and yet relaxing...hang on I'm a bit thirsty...back in a tic.
