What Makes a Good, Traditional Barlow?

I predict the next batch of Barlows will have a few jigged bone handles to choose from, but I could be wrong.

Gee, whatever gave you that idea?

Two colors, Chestnut and Blood Red Peachseed.
There's a little of my Dad's Walnut left, so a few of those also!
Spear blades, standard Nail nicks.
Half of 'em with Pen secondary.
The blades went out to heat treat, and they are cutting out springs as we speak.
I can feel my blood startin' to simmer! I love it when my dreams come true!!:)

I'm hoping they will come out dark, Fes. Hints of red, behind very dark brown-black.
Something like these guys!

I know exactly what you are talking about!!:D

More Jigged Handled Barlow Porn!
One of hundreds of mint knives stripped from the Factory Display
(sheesh), I am doing my best to save it for Knife Knuts of the future.
The handles have crispy edges, just like it came off the cutlers bench!

Let's see your jigged Barlows!

I sure would like to see the Chestnut turn out something close to this! :D
This sure is a GREAT scan Charlie! The jigging on the pile side is so sharp I can feel it on my screen!!

Charlie, you do too much for us! Thank you for your hard work.

Knowtracks-Oh man you are so right-That knife is so so so close to perfection isn't it! Far out - I just cant believe just how awesome Peach Seed is - it takes Case Early Red Bone - and a select piece at that to beat this!

The next lot of knives are going to be even better - which is a tough call, but with Peach seed!!!!
I cant wait for Thursday - 4 days off!! time to take some pictures, swap my edc's over, and do some Sharpening - Yes!!!! life is really good here at the moment!

You continue to do great work Charlie

I wonder why Schrade didn't stamp the Bolster on that lovely big Barlow!

Maybe because it is a single blade? (and maybe lower price point?)
Maybe long pulls, and stamped bolsters cost more to make?

Pre WW2 lower price point Remingtons (straight line tang stamp) gave up the Long Pull, and used cheaper covers (wood and synthetic)... they kept the bolster stamp, but flipped the lettering.

here is a straight line Remington that seems to have bone handles, it has 2 blades, but lacks the long pull

Premium Remingtons, two blades, long pulls, bone handle covers, upside down bolster lettering ;-)...

Ebony?

You are building an interesting Rem collection, Jon. Thanks for showing them to us. Someone told me (I cannot remember who?) that all Straight-line tang stamp Rems are subcontracts, or built by others. Wish I knew more of the story.

No Ebony in this Batch, WFC. Out of respect for the dedicated collectors (who keep this little enterprise going) I am trying to keep some distinction between batches.

I have wondered that myself, Duncan. It's like a blank canvas!!

I know that no-one today knows how to make stamped Bolsters as well as Bill.
I have looked at a lot of old ones, and few measure up. They are either unevenly stamped, slightly flattened, upside down or otherwise just not as good. The ones he did while at Queen were pretty good!
I think the Forum bolster done at Queen, after Bill left for GEC, was lasered, a much more expensive proposition.

I'd be very interested to read more on this subject :)

Another 'Aye' from the cheap seats!
