What Makes a Good, Traditional Barlow?

What truly makes a good traditional barlow is good steel at a cheap price. Barlows were meant to be INEXPENSIVE knives.

Hey Jon!
That's a very cool wee group of knives there mate!
Love it! That middle Boker's Bone sure is purty!

Amazing custom!! Nice take on the cheap, old workman's knife!!

I only own the one Barlow.. I will say that it is the nicest opening slippy that i own,the pulls are perfect (to me) on this sized knife...First class geometry (aesthetic and otherwise) and a good steel.....Nice slabs too!....Classic...... FES

I have to agree with you, Fes! Glad you are enjoying it! Great Scrimshaw piece you've got there, also! Whale tooth?

thanks, a lucky bay bid, here is a family shot

Nice Camillus, Invoice. Definitely a few years left in it!

Thanks but, that one is clear red synthetic, still purty :-).. hint, 2 pins in the handle = always synthetic.. 3 pins in handle means bone (usually, though boker does use 3 pins on some of their current german synthetic)

Camillus smooth bone that I just got off the bay. Whole lot of life left in it.

Congrats! You caught me napping, or it might have been mine. Enjoy!
I believe the Camillus Bolster stamp is from 1946 to 1956, after which it changed to BARLOW

here is a list of Camillus tang stamps
http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php/497708-Camillus-Tang-stamps-and-dates
it says your blade tang stamp is 1960- forward.. could be a blade swap, still very fine looking knife

here is a 1948 catalog pic, notice the pen blade tang is different than yours (catalogs are not always accurate images)

disclaimer, Ive been wrong before, try emailing Codger_64 or CAMCO to verify

Beautiful Buncha Bokers

Thanks, I blame you for getting me hooked on Barlows

Heres the pile side of those Bokers, note the difference in pen blade tang on the middle one, its a Solingen, the others are USA

Good Tip Jon, I quite often come in here and ( because I am always in hurry ) miss the fine print, synthetic! - it still looks great!
Thank you for that.

Invoice
That Camillus is great - as commented, there is lots of blade on that knife, loving that Bone, just a beautiful old Hue to it!

Hey, thanks guys! I just got lucky on the bay. I do have to blame Charlie for my latest addiction.:p

Yes an obsession it truly is. This Charlow hasn't been out of my reach in nearly two months now... It's now my favorite worry-stone, it's smooth blackwood scales just make you want to fondle it.

I know exactly what you are talking about!!:D

More Jigged Handled Barlow Porn!
One of hundreds of mint knives stripped from the Factory Display
(sheesh), I am doing my best to save it for Knife Knuts of the future.
The handles have crispy edges, just like it came off the cutlers bench!

While setting up this post, I came across a group scan that has some Jigged Barlows (Schrade and one Case, below). Most have been seen recently, but there are a couple not posted for a while.
