What Makes a Good, Traditional Barlow?

I am scared people are getting a bit sick & tired on my knives on wood,

Not at all. I love the understated wood background. Sometimes I overemphasize coming up with cool backgrounds, and end up distracting from the knife itself.

Then again, any pic is better than no pic, like Paul said ;-)

Great Barlow Gallery, Paul!
That NYK is the first I have seen with a clip blade! The two I have are both spears. You must have acquired that recently??

Thank you Charlie, I came across the NYK mid last year? I believe it's posted in this thread back when I got it? And thank you for the EMPIRE barlow---it has special meaning coming from you and that it was the name of our family furniture store for over 40 plus years...

There's a depressing story about the nail nick on the pen blade since that picture was taken. I lent it to a friend and when he returned it I noticed he had improvised and ground a bigger groove for the nail nick with a Dremel. He simply said it's easier to open now

Wait a minute! I'm busy for a couple days and not on the Forum quite as much and what's this Radio Jack?? It must have slipped by me?? (off to the Search now to see!)

Nice Barlows you have Paul! Beautiful samples you have there!

Thank you a.r.m!!! I appreciate your compliment .

Perhaps it was originally a spear blade, since modified? It looks possible, although it's hard to say from this angle only.

-- Very nice, Paul!

Thanks Sarah and I agree about the possibility of the once Spear turned into a Clip? We will have to ask Duncan once it arrives to him safely ;)

I agree Sarah, its a wee beaut, Paul - I love your photography, I search my new property for great places to take photos of knives, as I am scared people are getting a bit sick & tired on my knives on wood, but somehow you can place a knife on a desk - and make a great photo from it - and Sarah - when are you going out on another hike - or even your classic inside looking out window shots?
Paul....that Schrade ,83 Barlow is a beauty - lovely Bolsters & Bone &....... , I bought a older one last night - hopefully it gets here nice and safe - instead of me Queening that one, she will be right into my edc lot!

NEVER tire of your pictures Duncan, they are one of the many reasons I come here :).

And thank you for the Schrade compliment---it's a very nice Barlow and stainless to combat my rust issues in the humid summer weather. I switch over to it from my trusted Gabon clip Charlow when the weather turns real muggy .

Great Barlow Gallery, Paul!

 Thanks for sharing them with us Paul :)

Duncan,

I never tire of seeing your knife shots, and the driftwood is such a perfect background (neutral color with subtle and interesting texture, the ability to hold knives at various angles instead of just flat)....

Don't leave that person alone with any more knives!!!

Thanks for the info on the NYK Paul. It's headed to NZ you say?? Cool!!

In honor of more spear barlows on the way, as well as the upcoming spear-mained Radio Jack on the #15 frame, Diamond-style...

... but especially for Duncan. ;)

Cool pics P (I spoke to Duncan on the phone last night :) :) :) )

Everyone- thank you immensely for the comments on the "steel on wood" - I actually do struggle with the concept- I think mainly because IZ love the native bush so much- my knives would look better there- but after reading comments- I'm going to stick with wood- but will keep an eye out for more exotic types of wood perhaps- Fes has the Native bush surroundings covered so I think in all it's pretty special.
Sarah- an impressive line up of knives- mmmm I see that Radio Jack has been used well! Thank you for the photos!

While consistent within the literary context established (the #15 Sawyer and Huckleberry knives), er, good luck with "Injun Joe"! :p

(Whatever they're called, however they're etched, I'm eager to see these razor barlows come into being. :))

Back to the present: a snowy day lull, new views and further appreciation of the etch and lines of a Day's Work.

Yes an obsession it truly is. This Charlow hasn't been out of my reach in nearly two months now... It's now my favorite worry-stone, it's smooth blackwood scales just make you want to fondle it.

I have to admire your knives until mine comes in.

I've always admired Charlies knives, but wasn't smart enough or quick enough to get one that I really liked.

I honestly didn't like the spey at first, but that little rooster called to me.
I learned how great a razor sharp spey can be........ then that little rooster called to me.
I know the jigged bone is coming out, maybe I should wait for one.... but that little rooster calls to me.
I can't decide between the trapper barlow or the thinner spey..... still the little rooster calls to me.
I couldn't decide between yellow bone or African Blackwood.... but the insistent little rooster calls to me.

I give up, I ordered the single spey in African Blackwood. You win Charlie, you win. Now maybe that little rooster will be quiet for a bit.

Anymore these days the AB spey Charlow and the cocobolo 48 Trapper see the most time in my pockets. They're an ideal combo for me. The spey blade more and more has become a favorite along with the spear.

Sorry if this has been answered, will the upcoming spear barlows have the trademark TC bolster? If so...what's a good way to preorder and/or purchase one? Thanks.

For you Woodrow F Call... During your agonizing WAIT for the package with your spey Barlow! Something to hold you over til that glorious moment. :)

It came in today...... but it has a small problem. The bolster has a little swirling scratch where the polishing marks weren't polished out or it got touched by an errant wheel or something. Very light but noticeable.

Recommendations for buffing it out?

Loozianna is the better for more Roosters!!:D

Yet more proof that Speys are indeed useful!! ;)

:eek:Steel is harder to buff than Nickel. If you send it to GEC they will buff it real nice. If you trust your abilities, you can sand it with 1200 grit on a firm backing, then buff with green cake, again with cloth on a firm backing. A firm backing keeps the planes true.

Thanks. Green cake? Like the stropping compound or something else?

I believe that would be a Yes.. you have email from me too

reposting some fantasy configurations, for my entertainment :-)
so no one gets confused, this is just two knives sitting on top of each other.
But I would prefer the Sheepfoot to have a pile side pull, and for it to be dropped lower in the pocket, so it matches the spear's spine... pure fantasy

The Charlow SheepPen…
