What Makes a Good, Traditional Barlow?

Decisions decisions.....single blade walnut or ebony. Don't have walnut, but I love me some ebony. Is this walnut from another of Charlies gunstocks?

I did hear a wee whisper when my ear was to the ground that Charlie got that beautiful example.

Charlie - I know I say this a awful lot- BUT that Saddlehorn Barlow ( I agree with you on your name Gevonovich my friend )
Has to be one of the better knives I have laid eyes on- and Hooray! it's a good ol' D/E!
Simply a fantastic knife. Obtaining that knife to me would be a coo in my knife collecting years- as I am sure it is to Charlie.

>That is a great comparison, displaying the GEC "Mag Covers" Jon! Good illustration of the differences!

>That Kutmaster reminds me of an old '52 Willys I used to have, Bob. Barebones, but useful and reliable!

>Look what followed me home today. I'm guessing this was more like an Impala in its day!!

I can't believe no one has not yet reposted these scans, simply amazing knife. This knife's type stamping was started in 1864,and that bone that "seems" pick bone is very old, just like it's owner....:)

Congratulations are in order,it went to the rightful owner.

Any soup bones coming this time around, Charlie?

I don't think so, Phil, but I might have a little surprise coming!
Watch this space! umm I mean, Thread - watch this thread!!

Sweetness to infinity!! Look at that thing!! What is it called....a dog leg barlow? ...a saddlehorn barlow? Wow!!

I've only heard of them as curved Jacks, or curved Barlows, Gev!
Glad it wows you!!

Same gunstock, Mink! There are a lot of knife handles in a rough gunstock!!

"in 1863, the name of the company became A.F. Shapleigh and Co. The famous Diamond Edge trademark was adopted in 1864...

By the late 1800's, ... It incorporated under the name of A.F. Shapleigh and Cantwell Hardware Company...

Augustus Shapleigh took his retirement in 1900 and the company reorganized in 1901. Another name change occurred. The new name was Norvell-Shapleigh Hardware Company...

In 1918, the company became Shapleigh Hardware Company"

" When Mr. Cantwell retired in 1886, the Company took the name A.F. Shapleigh Hardware Company. "

My guess, based on the tang stamp, is that makes Charlie's Curved Barlow circa 1886-1901

I really appreciate your research, Jon! My favorite knife is my Norvell-Shapleigh ... the brother to Charlie's super fine barlow. I am still in awe of looking at that barlow!!

Do you think Walden made them? (yours and Charlies)
also compare Charlies DE bolster to this KK you posted, as well as the jig on your Walden

Walden hmmmm? Could very well be!
Your - ooops, the D/E is a very standard Barlow length, 3 3/8".
Thanks for that astute analysis of the knife's time frame and origin, Jon!

Thanks, since I reread the rules here and figured out how to stay out of trouble, Ive been enjoying researching catalogs and sharing my professorial penchant. True Ive got a lot of time on my hands since I retired from teaching, but cant seem to stop pursuing, or is that parading, my erudition.

Ive really been enjoying the hysterical aspects (typo for comic effect) of the old worn bones Gevonovich and Charlie, and you, and others, have been sharing.

A good traditional barlow sometimes has a long pull Spey :-)

Great knife that one Charlie! Congrats on one heck of a score.

They were already offered with a long pull once so you would have to look for one on the exchange to find one.

The next long pull will be on the one-hand-opening "Razor" bladed Barlow, RobbW.
There might be more long pulls if GEC ever comes out with a Northfield Barlow, but that is likely a long way into the future!

Gentlemen, my apologies! I don't know how I missed your kind replies. Sorry to be so late off the line with my thanks--I appreciate your informed responses.

With so much interest in long-pulls, I'm surprised that GEC doesn't offer more of them on the #15 pattern.

Charlie--the Walnut and Ebony is stunning!! Nicely done.
