What Makes a Good, Traditional Barlow?

Walden hmmmm? Could very well be!
Your - ooops, the D/E is a very standard Barlow length, 3 3/8".
Thanks for that astute analysis of the knife's time frame and origin, Jon!

Before 1912, Humason & Beckley of New Britain Ct. is a possibility. Landers, Frairy & Clark bought them in 1912 and began producing LF&C pocketknives there. H&B were known for high quality pocket cutlery.

If I was guessing,I would say made by Empire.

My reasoning is that all the early Shapleigh farmers jacks I have(and this one with the same marking as Charlie's barlow,AF Shapleigh D ♦ E) were made by Empire. The bone on mine and Charlie's also seems consistent.

Empire has gotten little attention for the huge place it had in Cutlery history. They made knives for virtually every company that sub-contracted knives, like A.F. Shapleigh, and made special blades for other cutleries, like punches, can-openers etc..
Also, how many skeletons have we seen stamped Empire?
Dozens!
They were in business from the 1850s to 1930 or so, over 70 years. It was one of the biggest cutleries ever!
That bone comparison sure looks like same-source, Lyle. Thanks for putting it up!

With quality Charlie. That farmers jack is the heaviest knife I have relatively.
I forgot to mention,I have a Shapleigh 4 1/8" whittler that was made by Empire also.(well it's not mine quite yet):)

That jigged bone looks great! Doh! Another knife I have to resist buying.

That jigged bone Charlow is fantastic! Charlie just keeps on delivering over. Such amazing creations and wonderful contributions to our beloved passion for traditional pocket knives. I know my own Barlow never leaves my reach anymore, it's become a routine part of my daily pocket contents. :)

If anybody is looking for the walnut Barlow, they have a few of the single blade walnuts on Gunstockjackknives. They look great but I passed them up and not looking to buy any knives right now. Get them while you can.

Thanks for the pictures, Jacob, Steve and Phil!

Spam it as much as you like, AFAIC Payton!!

Nice collection, JIA!!

Some day I too will be able to post pics of the new Barlows - maybe even this year!! Sheesh - I am jealous!! I haven't been able to bring any home yet!!

Snifff . . . . .
