What Makes a Good, Traditional Barlow?

Oh sure, tease me Robin! :D

I guess I should have not teased you with the Norfolk.

What goes around . . . . comes around.

I need one of those yellow saw cuts or - I need to quit looking at this thread! :D

I would just about bet that if he goes to a Zoo, he would in fact, tease all the monkeys!!! :D

I Never teased the Monkeys BUT i have been known to wake up a colony of huge Fruit Bats and an always ANGRY Western Rattler at the Vancouver zoo, Back in the day.:D AND, I tease my cats endlessly, but they really deserve it.:D

Best regards

Why is there so little belly on so many of the barlows shown here with spearpoints? Just seems odd to me that a manufacturer would even use a spearpoint vs another blade style for a knife if the spearpoint will have almost no belly. I must be missing something.

Spearpoints have come in several variations for a long time. Check out the Vintage Knife Catalogs & Ads (Images Only) sticky.

For me the spearpoint on the #15 Boys knives and TC Barlows is close to perfection. Different folks. Different strokes.

Top to bottom: E.C. Simmons Keen Kutter #K50 Jack Knife, GEC #15 Huckleberry Boys Knife, GEC #15 Sawyer Barlow

I just note that barlows with clip points usually have more belly that the spearpoints above. I just find that odd as belly is one of the advantages of using a spearpoint blade in any pocket knife.

Still curious as to the answer of why a manufacturer would use a spearpoint with extremely little belly. A designer or factory rep may know. Just curious.

I have noticed that some spear-points are much broader than others - to the point of nearly being a spatula, whereas others are much more slim as seen in the TC Barlows. I guess there's a variation in spear-points as far as width.

The #79 for example...

Here's a spearpoint taking advantage of a being a spearpoint, and I can see how the blades broadness allows the belly

About the most belly I've found on a barlow's spearpoint:

Not sure I'll get an answer to my inquiry. Not even sure it's answerable.

Sorry to intrude and get this thread off on a tangent, but I asked here because it seems the spearpoints on barlows are the spearpoints with the least belly.

I'll back out now.

Here's an old Keen Kutter barlow with a belly on the spear point blade leghog. It has about 90% blade left on it.

I tend to agree. That is exactly why I sold the (most recent run) spear barlow I purchased. Point of reference....one of my 3 favorites of all time is my #85 with the über spear. Having said that.... should there be a clip/crown lifter in the works.....color me extremely interested.

Quick question for those in the know on the #15 pattern with GEC. How many different combos of the caplifter did GEC make? I'm looking hard for a cap lifter with clip point but all I find in stock is the spearpoint with caplifter. Was the run smaller for the clip + cap lifter, just more popular or a SFO? Thanks, Trevor~

The clip blade/cap lifter was the first to be produced, and they sold out very quickly. The spear blade 'crown lifter' is either less popular or a lot of potential buyers already have the clip version. If you want a caplifter model, buy it soon as they might not be made again for some time, but who knows? Just sayin'. :)

Thanks for the info Barry. I'll hold out for a bit longer and continue the search for a clip blade version but may have to settle on a spearpoint.
