What Makes a Good, Traditional Barlow?

Question for you guy's, I am somewhat new to the traditional spectrum and can see that the T/C barlow's are highly prized by members here. I currently own a SFO #48, Northwoods hawthorn, and some very nice #15's and #66's. Please tell me why I would want to own one of these when I already own knives I am impressed with, I understand the emotional impact of the one handed model, please explain to a "new guy" what it is with these GEC T/C Barlows, Thanks in advance!

For me the single bladed TCs are just the right size and the TC engraved on the bolster just looks REALLY good. They just call out to me like no other knife

A little history helps to understand the call of the Barlow. Although they originated in England, they are deeply embedded in Americana.
For generations, young boys growing into men coveted these strongly-built simple tools. They are mentioned in several stories and songs that cover early America. The long bolster stiffened the joint, and also gave a place for a signature, without having to add a shield, and the subsequent bragging rights that came with owning a genuine Russell, or Case . . . .or today, a TC!!
If you don't like apple pie, you may not like Barlows!!
You better like your Mom either way!!
:D

It should be noted that the Barlow has an intrinsic attraction that is not restricted to Americana. These attractions are mentioned in posts prior to this one. Ask the people in Turkey, Singapore, New Zealand, Germany, Sweden, Israel, Argentina - - the list goes on!!

Perhaps it cannot be fully explained. The entire world is divided into two classes, those who love Barlows, and those who don't!!
The same goes for Cilantro - yuckkk!;)

I recall when I was just a little kid, from the late 1950's through the 1960's, it seems like everybody had a Barlow - and if you didn't - well - you had no knife! :D

My Grandfather carried a really nice Russell Barlow. :o

I remember that my mother even knew what a Barlow was.:D

I totally agree with Duncan and his statement below.

Good eye, Sarah!

Thanks for letting this touch you everyone!!

Here's the man himself, self-effacing, but a force to be reckoned with!

THIS ^^ is most excellent! I just cant add any more to what the others have said already, this tribute is a beautiful thing to do.

Derrick, I don't know if you're reading this thread or not, but I wonder if you'll get more charlows from the recent run? Or did you get all yours in one package and they just sold out fast?

Phil that beerlow looks great! I suppose it's made by esnyx?

As President of the Cilantro Haters Club I just want to say thanks to Charlie for his tremendous efforts in feeding our Barlow addiction. A 2-blade red jigged bone and 2-blade blackwood one-arm are on their way to Texas.

And special kudos to Derrick and his team for getting that batch posted so quickly.

For those who missed out on this round of KSF offerings, don't forget that there are several other dealers who would will be getting some in (if they don't already have them). Give them time to get pictures taken and posted on their websites.

I can hear the rumbling of some new horsies headed for me stables!!!

I would still love to see a production Beerlow... a Cheerlow???

That is my grail knife. I'm looking for someone to remove the pen blade on my #15 and add a cap lifter. Would be much easier if someone decided to do a production run of them. Hint, hint.

The Sheepsfoot and cap-lifter look to be a great combination, but the Charlows are all traditional Barlow patterns. My guess is that things will stay that way.

Nice. I have one coming as well in Rust Red.

Is that Rust Red? If so is that photo an accurate representation of the color or are they lighter/darker?

Thanks

Saddle brown on the saw-cut and it is color accurate, if you have a calibrated monitor. The rust red would be quite a bit more red, IMO.
