What Makes a Good, Traditional Barlow?

I just would like to say that my good Friend Paul has a serious payback coming his way,Primble Sir - I am shocked that you take sides Brother.
Today I carry my Red Bone Clip-point long Pull - nicknames Flat Belly, as well as a lovely olde Peach-seed Schrade -Walden Stockman gifted to me by Paul - man life is just great to be able carry such lovely knives, I am on my way to mates beautiful farm up north - I must do a Thread with the farm and his knives one day.
Have a great day folks.

Not really taking sides brother Duncan - it's just that BARLO # 15 pic is a little scary to me - yes - I know you are really a good man - but - that pic - it's scary!! :o

:D

Is that grey color common in Akita's Bobby? He is sure handsome! Which Barlow does he like? :)

They actually come in a variety of colors. This one ia a salt and pepper female.

To stay on the Barlow subject, this is the one that started it for me over 45 years ago.
I bought this at a gas station from the card full of Barlow's on the counter when I was like 12 or 13 years old. It just happened to be one of the many that my Dad would take from me over the next couple of year when he passed while I was only 17 years old. Fast Forward 30 years while at my Mom's house. We were doing some cleaning and she said that I probably would like to have this. I looked and she had a Fruit knife and this Colonial Barlow in her hand. I was very moved as I felt the connection to my Dad. Anyway, I have always loved Barlow's and they probably will be a huge part of my collection as long as I am around. All Charlie has done was to pour gas on my fire to own more of these beautiful pieces of history.

Very cool about the old fruit knife and barlow. And by the way SHE sure is a pretty dog. My grandfathers, same side of family-one died and grandma remarried so we called him Gramps too, both carried barlow knives. I secretly hoped I would end up with one of their knives, but alas, both men and their knives have passed on without me knowing the disposition of either of those knives. I have recently been acquiring a few barlows, and they bring back fond memories.

This one arrived in the mail yesterday. Up to this point the only spey bladed Barlow I had was my soup bone Day's Work, and I think it was feeling lonely...

I'm quite pleased with it. It's my first Barlow that hails from Sheffield, and those gents knew how to build 'em!

Also, my apologies for the so-so pictures. I'm still waiting for my "Primble's School of Knife Photography Home Study Course" books to arrive in the mail. ;)

That is a nice one Dan. Charlie has said before that the spey bladed Barlows are rare. Is that dark sawed bone on the handles?

Thank you! Yes, I forgot to mention that. They are dark (almost black) sawcut bone. They're very highly polished, though, which I thought a bit odd.

Whether it's traditional or not is up for debate, but there's no question that this is a good one!

I carry it most days. The patina is developing nicely and the interior mammoth ivory is getting nice and buttery!

I received a package from Charlie today, inside which was a signed copy of Mike Robuck's excellent new book, and a cool Canadian $2 coin. I thought this might be an appropriate place to say thanks - with appropriate Barlow content of course ;)

This is my very first Charlow, a gift from the good Mr C himself. Thanks a lot for the book Charlie, and for the coin my friend

Jack

Good on you Jack - you deserve it so much my friend - and Charlie Sir- they broke the moulds when they made you - thank you for wjat you do to this great place.

Nicely done, Charlie! Jack, that's an odd coincidence! I just received the copy of Mike's book today that I ordered a couple days ago. It looks like a good one!

That is certainly a nice gesture by Waynorth and I am sure Jack will enjoy the read.:)

I saw your 77 to 15 size request this morning Jack and took a picture of my forum knife along side two of my TC Barlows:

We'll I'm glad to make this a trifecta, one of my favorite Paul Newman movies "Nobody's Fool"---he ALWAYS played the trifecta;)

I rec'd a copy as well from a very GENEROUS Markesharp:thumbup: and in addition to that he included a gift of his own making:eek::cool:

This beautiful re-worked "Keen Kutter" Barlow that he scraped the damaged pen blade and converted to this fantastic Single Blade Spear with beautiful red bone covers:)

Thank you again Mark!!!
