What Makes a Good, Traditional Barlow?

Salvaged a couple old survivors from a local junk store this weekend:

The broken scale on the Robeson just breaks my heart. The Remington is a complete basket case between the broken pen blade, the nearly-dead spring on the main, and the covers that are literally falling off. I'd love to rebuild that one into a single blade, but I don't know what to do about the spring issue.

Celebrating people and happenings is a human pastime. We celebrate birthdays, to revere our loved ones, and we remember our heroes, missing and present on Veterans Day/Remembrance Day. We celebrate Anniversaries to mark marriages and events.

My daughter on her second birthday::)

A lino block print by my wife, made many years ago. The birthday was in 1974.

I cannot help but be amazed by, and to celebrate the beginning of the TC Barlow. The first shipment was sent on December 7th, 1012.
I will let the back label say the rest!

The parts are patiently waiting in line at Great Eastern, for other knives to go through production, and I am impatiently biting my nails, hoping the Anniversary knife will live up to our expectations!!

What makes a Good Traditional Barlow?? Innate quality, and a good history!
Thanks to all for helping to make that history!!
If only I could afford to give them out to the participants here, I would!!
Party favours*!!:D

Happy (upcoming) Birthday Charlie. A great post my friend. Here we are on page 312 of your thread :)

I had my first Charlow in my pocket today, being gifted it by you meant a lot to me :)

Thanks, Jack. Your words mean a lot, you being one of our premier posters, and tour guides!!

Nice to be reminded of that UK-located Barlow with its Yorkshire accent!!

Very, very nice label for these, Charlie! It's a very exciting time in the TC world, isn't it? :)

Charlie,

What can I say that hasn't been said about your barlows? If I have said it once, I've said it a million times... pure genius. I, for one, am not surprised as to how well these knives have caught on, but instead surprised that it took as long as it did!

As I continue to pick up the occasional old barlow to add to my collection, my appreciation for the TC only grows. In my opinion, these are not just good, traditional barlows, they are the IDEAL, traditional barlow in every aspect. Each new run has me drooling over the variety in your designs, and excited to find similarities to old knives I have seen or owned. Truly classic knives that will go down in history.

Not only have you brought about a knife that satisfies most, if not all, traditional knife collectors and hobbyists, but I believe that the Charlow has been the main catalyst of the shift towards traditional knives that is occurring in the knife market today.

We are privileged to have you here, my friend. Thank you, and everyone else involved with the creation of these timeless pieces of art.

Thanks for sharing this, Charlie :)

I might have shown this off here, but it is such a great knife - beside Charlies great Barlows...

Fantastic, Charlie.

I love the use of the block print, all the more special because of the meaning behind it.

I'm all the more impressed, now learning that these knives survived the shenanigans of 1066. ;)

:D

Perhaps I should ask this privately, but is it too soon to start talking about your next endeavor, the miniaturization of each of your original TC Barlows?

Nice Queen Dan Burke. I love mine also. I'm guilty of feeling my Charlows are too perfect to make one a user, so I end up carrying the DB.

Thanks for the kind replies. I have two TCs now and each of them are users for me ;) :p

It just doesn´t feel alright to keep 'em in the collection. This kind of knives are so wonderful to use. As well as many of the #15s :)

Nice Barlow, Andi!! I always liked the looks of that edition.

Ummm . . . .~P, where did you get that huge penny, hmmmmm????

I like the way your tan Barlow is getting pocket-worn and mellow!!

P, I didn't even notice the penny at first...seriously. I was too fixated on the Barlows. That brown bone TC is beautiful.

Indeed. That chestnut bone is, in my opinion, the best I've seen on a TC. Beautiful, Sarah.
