What Makes a Good, Traditional Barlow?

Hey Charlie, any chance of ever getting a small batch of southpaw charlows with the etch and pulls/crescent on the other side? I have to open all my slippies in my right hand and then move it to my left for use unless I want to break the nail on my right index finger, which is the most important fingernail I have for guitar playing (I'm a flamenco player).

Of course righties will say, "oh come on, it's no big deal." And all us southpaws have gotten used to living in your backwards world and are ambidextrous to some extent. But it is so gratifying to use a knife designed for my dexterity. For instance, my full lefty small Sebenza and lefty CQC-7 are the only moderns I've kept over the years - along with a fully ambi BM 943 - cause they are so satisfying to use.

I can only imagine how close I would grow to a lefty charlow. Plus I can already see the awesome "southpaw" etch in my minds eye. 😍

I wish I could afford to do a lefty, Mik!:(
I suggest getting your left-handed support group together, and order a bunch!:D

Great collection, Paul!

What a Keen, Mark!!

You heard the man guys...

Out of curiosity, About how many do you suppose it would take to make the "southpaw charlow" a reality? Would the only difference from a manufacturing perspective be the pull grinding?

Great looking Barlow!

I picked up two old workhorse barlows this week.

Like your's, the lower knife is a Keen Kutter. It has a bit less blade remaining as I had to reprofile the spear blade. The previous owner had used the bench grinder on a few occasions.

The top knife is from Schmidt & Ziegler and has fairly thick covers.

Gotta love these old veterans from the glory days of the U.S. cutlery industry!

It's no TC, but I must say, this Schatt is pretty darn nice. I wish they had stamped the bolsters on both sides, though!

updated group shot

Very nice group of TC Barlows.;)

Hey man, is the single clip second from the left mislabeled? Isn't the antique Amber from 2013 kind of a light brown like the one in my avatar?

Cassander - the one in your avatar was definitely labeled antique amber. ;) Hey - that looks like MY knife!!:D

I am beginning to wonder if there were two different antique amber versions.:confused: This is not the first time that I have seen the discrepancy.

Maybe Charlie would be kind enough to get us straightened out on the antique amber version(s). :)
