What Makes a Good, Traditional Barlow?

Thank you Paul, Nick, and Perry.:)

The dark cloudy skies today made for not so flattering pics - I will try for more pics when the light is good. ;)

The TC looks much better in person than the flat light made it look today. :) I am very pleased with it's current appearance.

A very competitive and exciting Super Bowl today.

Barry will like your new signature line Paul.:D:D:D

LOL Primble...I just got a knife from him this week so I hope he'll cut me some slack:p

First and foremost a Minnesota Viking fan...my allegiance to NE goes way back to when former Viking great Chuck Foreman ended his career with the Patriots:thumbup::cool:

Yes - I remember Foreman and believe he was around when "Sweetness" Walter Payton was still playing.

I could have my time frames mixed up though. :D

I wonder what kind of pocket knife they carried? :D

I have been very pleased with the fit and finish of this S&M Sheepfoot Barlow. Razor Sharp. Blade is a little thin, but really nice.

Any of you other guys have or like this one?

What Makes a Good, Traditional Barlow?

When it pulls triple duty as a talisman, worry stone and good luck charm. This special Ebony Spear/Pen TC Barlow has been well documented in this the Traditional thread---rode in my pocket EVERY day for a little over 13 months ending back in April of 2014. There were other knives carried with it but this TC was there EVERYDAY for over 13 months:thumbup:

It has witnessed two back to back National Championships for the NDSU Bison football program as well as a number of very special athletic heartbreaking and joyous sporting events. I constantly flip the TC over in my hand and rub the TC bolsters with my thumb:thumbup:

It is thee GAME knife and comforting Good Luck (most of the time) Charm in addition to a fine piece of cutlery.

It witnessed a special Superbowl victory tonight as well shared with my Wife and two Son's:thumbup: Another memory tied to this very Special TC Barlow:cool:

Nice knife and great story, Paul. Hope you and the boys aren't as crazy as the Gronks! :D

It came! I was wondering if you ended up getting one or not. :) Your pictures look fantastic too! Just using a cell phone? Anyway glad you're happy with it and that I'm not the only one admiring S&M's most recent offerings.

Thanks Shaggy, the knife is my favorite knife I own---I have others that are more special/sentimental as I have rec'd them from dear friends but that TC has been "my knife"---I have many others, way to many as a matter of fact. I will never part with this Clip/Pen TC Barlow due to all the memories it holds:thumbup:

The expression on my youngest son's face was due to the emotional drain the game took on us all:o:thumbup:

You look like you were pretty worn out too, Paul. That certainly was a rollercoaster ride to watch! After that circus catch at the 5 yard line with 30 seconds left it was like "oh boy, Pats gonna lose ANOTHER one like THIS!??" Unbelievable INT by Pats but honestly Seahawks gave that away by not running. A win is a win, though. :D
I imagine quite a few people here regard their Charlows as their "one knife" too. I hope someday I can claim to have a knife that dear to me also.

Paul: Super-fine looking family!! Good to see you all enjoying life together. The knife ain't bad, either. I'm guessing that it could get handed down at least two more generations beyond the two in the photo. You're giving that TC lots of memories!!

Some o you may remember the franken-Camillus I posted a while back. I decided it was best to have it re-done and taken back down to the single spear blade and remove the CAMCO sheepsfoot that was on the pen blade spring and had almost no snap.

Well, I just received the knife back from Mark (@marksharpe) and it's stellar. He was able to preserve the bone scales and the result has a great snap open and closed, and it rides really nicely in my watch pocket. He had to blunt the edge to get the blade to sit in the handle, but after about an hour and a half with my lansky, I have it down to a hair popping edge. Thanks Mark!!

Wow, Charlie-- what a beauty! Congratulations. :-)

The "graceful curve" throws me off a bit visually, but I'm guessing it makes perfect sense in-hand.

Oh, and?

Oil Those Joints,* if you haven't since making the scans. Your knife looks a little thirsty. :D

~ P.

*(Ain't nobody keeps a knife oiled like Charlie.)

I always wipe them before scanning 'em, and oil them right after, Sarah.
But I certainly appreciate being reminded, given the state of my 70+ year old memory mechanisms!

Better luck (or coach) next year, Seahawks! Congrat to the Pats!
At least it wasn't a boring romp!!
I like your monkey-wrench image Barry!
Great effort in that TipTop, Bleh!

Over many years, Robeson made some beautiful, useful knives.
Their philosophy included comfort in the pocket, hence terms like "Pocketeze" (sp?) that they applied to some of their patterns.
Their efforts spilled over into their Barlows, and they used rounded or "eased" ends, i.e, bolsters and bareheads with smooth profiles. They also used semi-sunk joints, and rounded most edges. Here are 8 Barlows of various ages. The top one is modern and Queen produced, and lacks the easing details, but has nice redbone and a great Bolster stamp!

The Top four:
The fourth knife is a Terrier, a secondary and rare brand for Robeson.

The Bottom four:
I like the full bolster stamp on the last knife, and also the shortened tang stamp, which reads;
RC Co. (over)
ROCHESTER
Both blades are stamped, hinting at an older knife.

Heartwarming news, Jack.
In honor of what I consider ale to be like in your turf, I just went out for some Extra Special Bitter, to accompany tonight's Burrito dinner!
Salud!!
