What Makes a Good, Traditional Barlow?

I spent the better part of the day with these two Barlows, which arrived here at 9:00 a.m. this morning. I went to work on them immediately. I had to re-profile blades on both knives and finally got them up to Primble specs by late afternoon. I then added a re-patina on the blades of both the old Robeson and the old Schrade Cut. Co. Barlow. Strong snaps on both and lots of life left in them :

I normally never show a before picture, but, since this Schrade was way rougher than anything that I normally purchase, I thought the after was drastically different from the before condition:

Amazing job Primble on the Schrade! I love that Robeson though! It is just gorgeous. :thumbup:

Primble I'm eager to see what you do or dont do to that HS& OVB! Thinking it doesn't need much primbleization but still would love to see it under your lens. The Genuine Barlow you sent me is still waiting for the proper light for me to take a picture. For now it just doing its proper pocket duty.

GREAT cleanup Primble!:thumbup:
And as always GREAT pics!! :cool:

Dave

Fingers are sore aren't they? :D

A little bit Dave. ;):rolleyes::D

Thank you everyone for the nice comments on the old Schrade Barlow. The heavy build of the old knife allowed a pretty aggressive restoration, yet, was left with more than substantial blade thickness.

Amazing difference in the before and after shots. Excellent work Primble!

Thank you guys !!! :thumbup::)

Primble - Man that is a super neat old mouse trap! Oh yeah, that Barlow ain't bad either:cool::thumbup::)
Have a nice Sunday. Congrats on another win, you all took it to them in the 2nd half. My Vols just did not have
the finish in them.

Thanks for the compliments Ron. No shame in a 3 point loss on the road. Tough to win on the road in the SEC. The Gators gave us a hard fight. :grumpy:

On to Baton Rouge :o, then S.C. at home ;), then ohh noo - Knoxville :eek::confused: !!! :D:D:D

Thanks for the before picture, Rob! It is nice to see the story behind your "Primblization" efforts!:)

I have searched a bit, and found a few threads on cleanup of vintage knives. But I haven't found any thing on the "Primble method." So, my question is for Primble.
Have you done a write-up on your methods? Because you could write a book, and the proof is in the pudding! (you don't soak them in pudding do you? :D) A primer or nudge in the right direction is appreciated.

Not really, although I did post some tips in the Old Knives thread a while back. :)

Nice example of a New York Barlow, Rob.
I invite you to post your recent nice Barlow acquisitions in the "What Makes a Good Traditional Barlow" thread!

Thank you Charlie. I suppose they could feel more "at home" in this thread. :)
