What Makes a Good, Traditional Barlow?

Muddy waters for sure, Primble. And oh man, that website... what a blast from the past!

I'm really liking the looks of these John Primble Barlows. Any idea who actually manufactured them though? I can't even figure out exactly which blade steel is used as some dealers list it as 1095 and others 440c. I did send Blue Grass Cutlery an email inquiring as I was told they own the Primble name but have not heard anything back yet. The jigged blue bone sure looks nice though.

The shape of the handle suggests Utica cutlery. I'm not home but have several pics of Utica-made Barlows.

"I'd rather drink muddy water, and sleep in a hollow log!"

Muddy water and a hollow log ain't so bad!

I'd give one of them new Primble barlows a try if I didn't already have a few better ones ;)

Sittin' on the porch with my jug, my gal, my guitar and a Barlow in my pocket sounds like heaven to me! Now if that was West Virginia we'd have a good old song!

I'd play Sally Goodin' all day if I could
But the Lord and my wife wouldn't take it very good
So I fiddle when I can, work when I should
Thank God I'm a country boy

What Makes a Good, Traditional Barlow?

One with a unique story:thumbup: I sent this to Duncan when he had lost his beloved Single Spear Ebony TC Barlow. For the last year or so I had looked and finally found a replacement for Duncan---we have dealt back and forth so often I can't exactly remember the countless deals we've made.

Duncan's more of a Single Blade Man and I prefer the Two blades---slowly coming around to single blades as well:thumbup:

Well, Duncan sent this back to me as I sent Duncan the Single Spear Blade TC Barlow in Ebony---so after a year or more apart this Pen behind the Spear is back in my pocket.

The neatest is thing is knowing Duncan broke it in and cared for it well:thumbup:

Pretty cool Paul! It went halfway round the world and hung out with a fellow knifer for a year or so and now back home with some nice patina!
Perry:cool:

That makes two of us Charlie.

I grew up respecting the "Primble" name and the badge of honor. I loved the quality of the knives they sold. :o:o:o

That same quality does not exist today - it is a purchased name.

It would be the same to me if the name was TC Barlow that was auctioned off to a maker of much less quality. No go for me.

Drink all you want in your holler log. :barf:

Thanks Perry---it just adds to the sentimental value of an already great knife. Get better my friend:thumbup:

A fantastic story Paul. It's great to see the generosity between collector's.

Thank you---Duncan is the generous one in this tale, I told him if we're ever implicated in anything that I'm tellin who's ever in charge he's the Mastermind and I'm just the Muscle:p:D

Have a Great Weekend Everyone---Hug your Sweetheart tomorrow!!!

Very cool story Paul :)

Legends!! ;) :D

lol - now lets get the TRUTH out here folks-something Paul has trouble with :D;)

Fist of all- its great looking at these wonderful knives in the most favoured Thread of mine-and seeing who I call my mates commenting-thank you everyone for ...well for being you
I want to take some photos later today- in fact I need to, as I too received a package yesterday in fact, and I need to thank Paul, Charlie, and also I need to put out great thanks to Brett!!
Photos coming soon.

Back to the real truth - Paul Blew me away by sending that awesome Twin Bladed Ebony over-as we know a very very hard knife to be able to find - Wen I lost my Ebony ...it was actually a very devastating loss, as I carried that knife when I met our good mate Jack in England-that was just great Jack - and it went all over the place with me - only to dissapear in NZ? so Paul filled that void for me by sacrificing his one and only Ebony...that pretty cool stuff right there, I was AGAIN blown away when Paul told me that he managed to find a single Bladed PPP and that he is sending it over  - so it was only right that his Ebony comes home.
It was with mixed emotions that that knife leaves, such things run through your mind - so scared of Paul being somewhat dissapointed in the fact that I returned a gift from him- and that the knife wasnt so special to me..... but with relief he see's it as I - that that knife is extremely special - because of the sacrifice Paul made, and how I just treasure that knife - so he can now re-acquaint himself with his long lost friend, and now mend the untidy Sharpening that the mongrel NZ'der has scarred it with :o

Paul my friend -Thank you, I have now a Ebony Single blade back here with me, There is more - but that will come with photos, but to Brett and Charlie-my MASSIVE thanks go to you guys as well, - which will come with photos.
I must go, but What a great place this is- because of you people in it

Looking forward to seeing the pics Duncan, you're a star mate :)

Great story, Paul and Duncan!:thumbup: (Whatever the REAL truth is :D)
Stealing a phrase from Brett's "Lost Knife" thread, Paul & Duncan Rock!

Jake I really like that Primble. The blue is very nice looking and would make a ni pace addition to your blues. (And I don't care where it's made!)

I agree with Charlie that it looks like a Utica. I have one around here somewhere.

Well said Duncan! I too have done this with a knife before. However the one I gave back to Barry was one I had talked him into selling to me, out of his EDC rotation and a knife he dearly loved. Some months later I began to think that the knife belonged back with Barry and sent it back to him. Sometimes knives belong with their rightful owners.
