What Makes a Good, Traditional Barlow?

Wow, Ron, I'd call that a magnificent find!! :thumbup::thumbup:
To my admittedly inexperienced eye, it looks to be in great shape, even "tip top" shape! ;)

Ron and Liam, very nice old Barlows!! I love this thread. Just tune in and you are likely to find an interesting Barlow!!!

And then:eek: . . . . . gif me a break!! That is a dynamite creation Al!! What a Hoot!!!:thumbup::thumbup:

I've got two vintage Remington barlows, one is a spear point that had a literal sliver of a pen blade. The scales were cracked and missing in some spots. I just found another Remington, this time a clip point blade and a full pen blade. Scales are still missing on one side, craced on the other. I sent the spear point to Bob Picklesimer, he removed the remnants of the pen blade and made my barlow a single blade knife, and put new green bone scales on it. I'm not sure what type of scales I want on this clip point Remington, but I was thinking more bone.

BTW, thanks Jon, Primble, Barry and Charlie! I was just funning about.

Speaking of elusive:

Ron, that is a very nice Tip Top! Liam, same goes for that Diamond Edge! Just really handsome classics and hard to find in that condition!

Thank you Al and Charlie for the comments - the light was pretty good this afternoon, reflecting off the snow. ;):)

Ok Primble I have to ask as this has been nagging at me...what TC is your favorite?

I may be asking an impossible question as you have so many nice and rare TC's but for fun what ONE would you choose if you just absolutely had to choose one only:confused::o

Boker still makes a line of traditional patterns in Solingen. I just can't understand why they haven't brought back their Barlow. I'd love one in the "beer barrel" series :)

That's a beauty Ron! :cool:

That is a very tough question for me to answer Paul, as I waffle back and forth between them. The easiest answer might be to say "The one that is in my pocket". :D

My first most wanted was the Walnut Sheep Foot, then I dreamed of having an Antique Yellow Sheep Foot. After I had those two, it was the Antique Amber that kept me awake at night, wondering where I could find one. The long pull spears were next, as I had none and figured I would not ever find one. Patience persevered and I ended up with three, well actually four of the long pull spears, before I traded one to the Antique Amber Clip. They are all very special to me and a couple were gifts, which, puts them in a different category.

I missed out on some that I wanted a lot, the soup bone Sheep Foot, the fancy rosewoods, and the Copperhead, but, I know that I am fortunate to have the ones I found or were offered to me. ;)

Charlie just keeps thinking up more great designs and variations, so I think I might have at least a few more in my future. :)

Well - you asked ! Sorry I could not be more definitive! :D:D:D

Thank you for the comments guys. :thumbup::)

Nice old Boker Rachel. :thumbup:;)

This PPP will be my favorite tomorrow ..................... I think. :confused::confused::D

Primble, I wish you had kept a journal of your searches, your trades, names and dates, all the people with whom you've communicated... It would be worthy of its own thread in the Blade Forums!

From time to time I do get obsessed with a particular knife... But I lack your ambition, your focus.

And what a gift are your photos and posts! You have taken us along on a wonderful journey of traditional pocket knives. I can't wait to see your next all-time favorite! :thumbup:

Very nice of you to say Scott. If I remember correctly, you have a very nice bunch of TC Barlows, yourself.

Thank you!!! :thumbup::thumbup::thumbup::)

I wonder if Mike Latham has any plans for a spear point long pull 77 Marlow? Seeing all of these spear point Charlows really makes me lament selling off my Charlows. I still have two, one I carry every day and the other I put up.
