What Makes a Good, Traditional Barlow?

Did the latest run sell out quickly? I was at work when they became available, and now I can't find them anywhere. :(

I really looked forward to these sheepfoot barlows. Looking forward to seeing more pictures of yours when you get them.

The walnut on those Queens is quite spectacular! I wonder how they got it to look that way??
. Only way I have been able to get walnut to look like that is linseed oil or stain. The way it's cut also flat/quarter sawn. I like the rounded edges on the Queen barlow.

Warning about the Blue Suede Slips!
It pains me to say this:grumpy:, but if they get wet or sweaty, they might corrode your knife!
My apologies!! :o
Use them in dry weather, and don't store a knife in them!
Sigh . . .the best laid plans . . . . . . . .
If it is any consolation, I subsidized the cost, so you paid almost nothing for them.

No worries, Charlie. But how did you discover that they might corrode your knife?!

Oh no!!!!! I may have to return my Tan Jigged Bone Charlow :D

Thanks for everything Charlie…slip or no slip, you're the man!

I was taught the cobbler trade from a third generation shoe maker from the age of 8 till late in my teens and one of the things that was always drilled into my mind was the benefits of leather to absorb moisture from the foot and pass it through to the air. Id guess the knife pouch did just that, by picking up moisture in the pocket (warm body temp air) and transferring it to its inner case that held the knife (depositing the moisture). Also Id say the suede finish vs a traditional finish may have caused some of the issue also, but we would have to know what finish and dye chemicals were used and their reaction to moisture. Last but not least most leather sheaths are hung from the belt and not closed up in a pocket to allow the transfer of moisture from the body hence they don't suck up body moisture and allow it to sit next to the steel even when removed from the body. Of course this is just my opinion and what I have seen and been taught..............I guess it all comes down to what you said charlie "Sigh . . .the best laid plans . . . . . . . ."

No worries Charlie, I just considered the slip a thoughtful extra and wasn't aware of it until after I'd placed my order. Mine will just have to live in the tube it comes in.

The top two are Tan jigged, and Antique Yellow jigged respectively.
The Tan is the same dye as antique Amber, but looks completely different on jigging, than on sawcut bone. I think they both came out really well.
The jigging pattern is a step up for sure!

My Tan TC will show up either tomorrow or Tueaday (I love living on the West Coast :D ).

Under the right lighting, the Tan Charlow looks a lot like another one of your masterpieces, Charlie, the Real Harness Jack in Walnut Jigged Bone. If no one beats me to it, I'll upload some comparison shots when I get my Charlow. In the meantime…

Looks like you are in fine shape to wait for the mail! Maybe while you're waiting, you could shoot us a closeup of that fine lookin' Northfield!

Sure thing! Sorry for the delay, I was on shift yesterday, and don't have means of getting pics from my camera's sd card onto a computer at the station. My 77 is starting to patina nicely, but I couldn't get the colors to show up in this light.

I've got a thick blue suede leather slip which I carry pretty much any knife that will fit these days. The reason being that it keeps even a larger knife upright in my pocket. I've not had any problems, OK it hasn't got wet or sweaty but then I wouldn't keep my knife in a wet and/or sweaty pocket either:)

Is it a dye issue?

Sam

Hey Sam,

That is why I said the chemicals from the dye or leather finish might be the issue but they are an unknown for now.

Sorry to hear about that but thanks for the update.

No worries Charlie. I'd love to have a Soup-bone Charlow just so that I could have problems with a blue-suede leather slip. ;) :D It was a brilliant idea--mixing Elvis and blue suede, and owners can always just display the slip next to the tube for full effect! :)

I wonder if the culprit is chrome salts in the suede?

No worries, Charlie. But how did you discover that they might corrode your knife?!

Scott I beleive my situation was what sparked Charlie's warning. Before I begin I must say this is in no way meant to taken as a complaint. It is a tale of stupidity and user error.

Ok so on Saturday we celebrate St. Patrick's day in Pittsburgh. You know parades, pints of stout, yadda, yadda, yadda... So after hours of standing in the rain and then finishing the day/evening hanging at my friends tattoo shop I summoned my driver and returned to my castle. Senses slightly dulled from many a Guinness stout, I remembered a package arrived earlier. So I decided to check out one of my knives. After some debate I decided I'd carry the jig bone in the slip tomorrow. I put said knife into slip and into my pocket. And promptly passed out on the couch. Four hours later I woke up and went to bed. Charlow still in slip and now on my nightstand. When I woke later and got ready for my day I was saddened to see that my knife had visible rust on the part of the blade that protrudes from the frame and on the bolster. Both on the mark side. Me so stupid, stupid, stupid!

And here's the details. I was wearing nylon shorts, cotton unders ;) and laying on a leather couch. It was also raining for 24hrs/100% humidity and I was a bit sweaty (ok a lot) when I woke up. I think this was the perfect storm of humidity and moisture to cause the damage.

It cleaned up well with Flitz but there is some etching on the blade and bolster. Maybe a few more applications might help. I've already started the natural patina process on the blade so I'm not going to do anyone more to it.

So be warned y'all. Don't drink and knife!

Oh the humanities!

All cleaned up!

For a moment there, I thought you were going to say that you went out drinking on Saint Patrick's Day with a BLUE pocket-slip!!!   I was on the edge of my seat! ;) :D

Nice knife

Wow, Brian! A cautionary tale with a happy ending. A comedy snatched from the jaws of tragedy! I'm glad you came out on the other side with a beautiful Barlow!
