What Makes a Good, Traditional Barlow?

For a moment there, I thought you were going to say that you went out drinking on Saint Patrick's Day with a BLUE pocket-slip!!!   I was on the edge of my seat! ;) :D

Nice knife

Jack there's one knife I always carry this time of year.

Wow, Brian! A cautionary tale with a happy ending. A comedy snatched from the jaws of tragedy! I'm glad you came out on the other side with a beautiful Barlow!

Thanks Scott!

Sorry about your tale Mr. Bad, glad it will turn out ok. My comment is, ^this photo should really be in a knife book or on a calendar, I know rust is bad, but that photo is sweet!

And thanks Brad but I like this one better. :)

That tan is really impressive. Interesting to know it's the same dye as in the much-admired antique amber sawcut bone barlows.

Well looks like you caught it in the nick of time! Flitz is pretty good stuff and you're probably right, a few more applications and you'll be fine.

TC mail day! Notice anything odd about this one?

It's not quite on par with the Harlequin, but it's definitely a neat one! The picture doesn't capture it all that well, but in hand there's a HUGE difference in the saw-cut marks between the sides. The pile side saw-cutting looks like what's on my copperhead bone model, which is very shallow, faint sawcutting.

Charlie, have you seen any like this?

I'm the 3rd (at least) owner, so I don't know if it left the factory like this or was repaired by GEC at some point, Perry. It sure looks all original to me. Curious, indeed.

First one I've ever seen like that, Dan! A different kind of Harlequin!!

OK, so I got my Palo Santo barlow in the mail today. I didn't really know what to expect because the wood seemed fairly run of the mill from the photos (pardon the pun). But after opening the tube...my jaw dropped. Not only for the awesome grain in the wood, but moreso for the magical "chatoyance" as Charlie learned us. The way that the grain changes based on perspective; the "tiger's eye effect." I tried to capture it here in a video. It probably looks best in full-screen HD.

Notice how the dark grains turn light and vice vera. Palo Santo literally means "holy stick." This one is special!

Payton206, thank you for the video. That really expresses the look of the wood quite well, it's fantastic.

Covet, covet, covet.

Thanks Perry. I'm just gonna use it now anyway and not worry about the finish.

:)

I know you celebrated in advance, but I hope you have a very happy Saint Patrick's Day my friend

Thanks Jack. Don't worry we will celebrate once again tomorrow!
I hope you enjoy the day too friend.

Brian - Not to worry my friend!! A little Elbow Grease, some Apple Cider Vinegar and some 0000 Steel Wool and that knife will look just like one of Primble's users, which I might add are usually quite the lookers :D

Thank you Ron. I've done the vinegar thing before with good results. As I said above I'm just going to move on and use it. I am very fortunate to have some other pretty ones to look at.
