What Makes a Good, Traditional Barlow?

Thank you for generously sharing this pic of your sheepsfoot barlows. You should be very very proud.

Yeah, I almost thought twice about posting this photo cuz this one weirdo who stalks me seems to have taken an unhealthy interest in my collection. I wish the guy would just buzz off...

I wonder how many of us thought, "Am I the weirdo he's talking about? I didn't think it was so obvious. Can Sugarleaf read my mind from 750 miles away?" (Not that I've mentally calculated the route from my home to Sugarleaf's.)

LMAO Scott! No, the person I'm talking about knows exactly who he is. I've tried to gently and diplomatically explain to that person via Private messages to back off, but then had to be more direct about it. Still, I don't think he gets the hint, so maybe he will now?

See what you've done Charlie? Created obsessive weirdo TC stalkers :D:D:eek:

Ok, sorry folks, didn't mean to cause any controversy or get the thread off topic because I'm getting lots of PM's on who the mystery weirdo is. Let me just say that the exchange of PM's, with this person was via Instagram and not here on BF. I don't want any of great members here that I've had contact with, chatted with, had dealings with, even begin to question if I'm referring to them. If you even have to question whether its you, it's not!

Back on topic...Barlows! Who's going to the Oregon knife show? Whoever does, can you please snap some photos for those of us who can't make it?

Either "my apologies" or "thanks for the back-handed compliment!"
:D

LOL, sorry Charlie. It was definitely meant as a compliment and not a backhanded one. I was trying to bring a little levity to my post. Again, my apologies for airing that out on your thread, but it seems to have worked, finally. I very directly asked this guy, in private, to leave me alone (after several attempts at doing it nicely), with no success. I mean, honestly, I couldn't have said it any more direct prior to today's post about it. Well, he just messaged me again and hopefully that will be the last time. Again, my sincere apologies to all members.

Let us get back to discussing Barlows!

I was just looking at Coolio's Hibbard the other day, thinking, "Hmmm, that looks familiar." Low and behold, what arrives in my mail today? It looks like two, but it's a single blade "H." The differences are interesting; mine has a long pull on the clip, no double groove on the bolster, and the tang simply says, "H" with a dot on either side. (So I'm guessing that mine is the first off the line... :)) Coolio wins on cost though, mine was a bit more than a double sawbuck...

You guys are giving Charlie a big head with all these TCs!:D Let's get back to something more like the barlows on page 1. This weekend I took in my first knife show, in Janesville, WI, and had a ball. I wasn't going with barlows in mind (well, I guess the thought is always in the back there somewhere:)), but one guy from Wisconsin had around 100, nice collection. I really liked an old Keen, almost new condition, but I didn't have the funds. But I did see an old Hibbard that caught my eye at a different table. Now the seller, a nice fella from Missoura', was giving me the eye while asking me if I'd ever seen a Hibbard w/o Spencer and Bartlett on the tang. Luckily for me, I had done my homework (thanks to THIS THREAD and MadMerryMonk's post), and I knew that HSB had a second line of barlows with only Hibbard on the tang. So anyway, a double-sawbuck later (that's right), this baby was in my pocket!

My research shows this to be from 1913-1927, so of course I'll assume it's the first one off the line from 1913.:D I have only seen 2 of these, and none exactly like mine. Al has one in post #5991, and I've seen another, but neither have the upper groove on the bolster. The stamps are definitely authentic, the main blade is a little shortened from years of use, but not bad. It could be reshaped a little, but I'll probably leave it as is. It's very very well made, solid snap! The sawcut bone is very nice, this "cheaper" non-OVB version they didn't taper the bone to match the bolsters, left it squared off. It was a little rusty, what you see here is after a first, short clean-up. If any of you have more information on the Hibbard, or one of your own, I'd love to hear/see more. Thanks for listening!

Just to show my TC love too::D

^ Roseskunk, that is one sharp looking barlow! Very nice bone, do you think the mark side slab is original or rescaled? I have not seen that tang stamp, but some of the others here that have more reference books may have. Looks like we may need to form a Hibbard club!:D

After a little more cleanup (I still need to do a summer internship to learn the Primble method:D)

Paul, Ron, Jake, and Augie - nice Barlows and photos.:thumbup::)

I've said it before and Ill say it again, Primble you are a master of the lens. Its like you have Jedi master skills when it comes to capturing the best of a knife. Of course it does not hurt that your subject in that photo is a stunner:thumbup::thumbup::thumbup:

Thank you for the comments and Todd Isa would vouch for that knife - it looks fantastic in person ! ;):D

roseskunk - your old Hibbard looks great !:thumbup::)

Robb - I agree with you about that copper patina on the Kabar and light.:thumbup::)

Got this one in the mail today. It completes my collection of the early run LP spearpoint TC Barlows.

Thank you to many here on Blade Forums for helping me find and add to my TC Barlow collection over the past year.:thumbup::)

Nice find!!
That knife looks great, especially on that surface! What is it??

Hey, your WTB and sig line is gone!! I guess you don't need any more knives, Rob!?!
;)
:D

Thanks Charlie - the surface is a 12" square flat finish ceramic tile. I purchased about eight different colored tiles last summer and I don't think I have ever used this one. I kind of liked it too, especially with the amber TC. :)

I am just giving the knife buying and signature line a rest. :o;)

I have added ten TC Barlows in the past six weeks and my wallet is begging me to stop, for at least a short while.:rolleyes:

Nope. Doesn't need any more. Primble is done. In the future, just send 'em all to me, Charlie!

Huh !!??:eek::confused::confused::confused: Get em while I am poor Scott. The tax man got his share too. ;):D:D:D

Coolio- Of course now that I look more closely at it, sure looks like one side was rescaled, especially as you look at the pins. I have a Case that one side looks 'normal' and the other side is dried out. I was thinking that perhaps one side sat in the sun for years, but I think it's a rescale. No matter, it's an interesting old knife... and yeah, is there a Hibbard thread?
