What Makes a Good, Traditional Barlow?

I love this thread. So many fantastic pictures -- and Barlows!

My Barlow collection stands at two, a Ka-Bar Coppersmith Dog's Head and a 1982 Case One Arm Man:

Really enjoying the tarnish that's coming on that Kabar, the fact that it has a dog shield puts it at one of my favourites as well.

It may only be at two, however, a fine two !!

All I know is a Barlow is one of my fav's, I don't know much about what makes a good one, I just look for a solid feeling Barlow I eye ball the workmanship the type of steel they I look at the info on the knife and Google it, I know back then even though it was a inexpensive steel they used the 0170-6C steel alot today it's called the 1095 CroVan it holds a great edge easy to sharpen and it's carbon infact Cold Steel had their U.S.A. Knives made by Camillus and their proprietary name was called CarbonV good stuff, that's another point if the knife is carbon or stainless a good quality stainless is expensive so the cost plays into it, "you pay what you get", I prefer carbon and if the edge is in great condition the handle is of good material and it has a good snap and tge price is right, as far as I'm concerned it's a good Barlow, but then I'm a fix blade type of guy, but I think a Barlow is a good looking knife.

Primble - That is a nice Keen Kutter, it fits right in with the gang :)

I need to find some friends to hang with my Tip Top :)

Ron : That is a nice looking Tip Top . I have a couple questions : Is the bolster on the other side also stamped with Tip Top ? If it is stamped , is it upside down ? What name is stamped on the Tang , Camco or Camillus ?

Harry

"Carbon V" was the name used by Cold Steel for an alloy steel modified with Chromium, Vanadium, and a couple of other elements. The exact composition varied depending on who was making their knives for them at the time.

Camillus used the name 0170-6C for a similar alloy steel.
Kabar uses the name 1095CroVan for a similar alloy steel.
The compositions of 0170-6C and 1095CroVan are very similar but not identical.

When Camillus was making Cold Steel knives, Carbon V was the same composition as 0170-6C
When Kabar was making Cold Steel knives, Carbon V was the same composition as 1095Cro Van

That's a great collection of Barlows! I love those two. Did Ka-bar make the Barlow themselves? Or was it done by CSC? Or Queen?

Man that's a nice looking knife right there

Thanks, Drew! I don't usually care for peach seed jigging, but GEC really did a great job on these.

What a collection of outstanding looking old Barlows - just look at those wonderful old stampings on those Bolsters! Nice group there Primble Sir.

Harry, sorry I did not see this question till now :) Yes the bolster is stamped and yes it is upside down. I would imagine they only made one bolster, which makes sense. The knife has the standard Camillus 3 line stamp. This is the clip model and has the Model "11" stamp. Thanks for the compliment :)
