What Makes a Good, Traditional Barlow?

Something else that also interests me about the Barlows, sort of has me wondering a bit, is that they lived in a small area of Sheffield, which was dominated by religious dissenters and radicals. Their immediate neighbours were Quakers, and the two families were eventually joined through marriage. I wonder if any of this had any influence at all over the type of knives they made, either because of the customers they might find in the immediate area, or the family's own beliefs?

"Nice knife Mr Barlow, nice PLAIN knife." ;)

Of course that was before it got all fancied up! :D

I have to correct the possible age or date stamp on my Russell Barlow . The name of Russell stamped on the tang was a straight line from 1876 to 1933 . I would like to know if anyone has seen any old Barlow other than my SEO&S that has the integral bolster/liner like the SEO&S , particularly the Russell's. Just trying to date when the industry stopped using that type construction.

That's an interesting thought Jack. It certainly holds true in other areas of production where tools, for example evolve differently due to outside social and economic influences.

I have just now caught up with the conversation in this thread and I am happy to be learning more about the Barlows. Great stuff gents.

Here's Pablo resting after he did some roughing in work on a ball/cage! A first for both of us. I used the TC and a Case peanut to get me to this point, probably peanut the rest of the way.

I thought this thread was the place one would first hear about TC Barlow runs? But as the new kid on the block, maybe I'm misinformed.

It looks like there will be a short run of 1 and 2 blade TCs with spey mains and copperhead jig bone, African blackwood, and antique green jig bone scales.

This is not an official point of announcement for anyone's run of anything. This thread is for the discussion of "What Makes a Good, Traditional Barlow". Lots of companies made and still make Barlows.

The best place to keep an eye on what's coming in the way of GEC, is the GEC website.

I'm very eager to see the copperhead.

Is that a new Barlow?

Im tellin ya boys, this will be the Summer of the #15! At least it looks like it's going that way to me.
