What Makes a Good, Traditional Barlow?

Good post Ishrub, very interesting info

Hope it's ok for me to quote you here - http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/s...awyer-should-have-had?p=14841215#post14841215

Your welcome Jack, good to see another honestly named character. My real name is Peter White, boring but its easy to suggest to Googlers that I am a journalist, security advisor or professor and sound plausible. I still consider myself fortunate to have avoided being called Maryann after three older sisters preceded me. My Dad's name is Morris John Blakie White but thankfully he adopted the name Jack from an early age.

If I remember I shall scan and post the relevant pages tomorrow. Contains some good images of antique Russell Barlows.

A treasure indeed, Ron! I looked for a Camillus 11 (I've had a 10 which is the spear main for years) for a long time and finally found one in April. The Tip Top is another grail barlow for me.

Question for you. On mine, the mark side "Camillus" on the bolster is larger than the pile side, how about yours?

Al - My Friend. your kindness and generosity is very much appreciated :)

Thanks my friend, I have to say that I was happier before the rise to fame of a small fat comedy actor :grumpy: ;) That would be fantastic, look forward to seeing them

You're not there actor? I suppose Will Power is not the race car driver then either?

I only added a location because I was getting 3 emails a week from star-struck younger members! I still get one occasionally  I particularly resent being asked if I am "The" Jack Black, cheeky buggers! :grumpy: ;)

The Camillus in its new home

A family reunion for 2 long lost cousins

They look great together! My pleasure, Ron.

Congrats on the new-to-you wonderfully-old Camillus barlow, Ron; that and the Tip-Top sure make a notable pair!!:thumbup:
Very thoughtful, generous gift, Al; your thoughtfulness and generosity make an even more notable pair than the knives!!:D:cool:

But of course you are "The Jack Black". That other guy is a cheap impostor. :D

Bob is a very insightful man, so you can cheer up, Jack! :p:p

Dean, happy to supply a shot of the opposite side my friend :)

Many thanks for taking the trouble to post that here Ishrub, it's hugely interesting  It's a shame that the information relating to the Sheffield Barlows is almost entirely wrong :(

At least they had the decency to title it The Barlow Legend :D with wiki stating:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Legend

A legend (Latin, legenda, "things to be read") is a narrative of human actions that are perceived both by teller and listeners to take place within human history and to possess certain qualities that give the tale verisimilitude. Legend, for its active and passive participants includes no happenings that are outside the realm of "possibility" but which may include miracles. Legends may be transformed over time, in order to keep it fresh and vital, and realistic. Many legends operate within the realm of uncertainty, never being entirely believed by the participants, but also never being resolutely doubted.[1]

Note: The section titled The Barlow Legend on pp 38-39 doesn't contain the offending Sheffield Barlows errors but too much detail ruins a good story. ;)

A big thanks to Ishrub and Jack Black for all the history. This remains the single most educational thread in the forums. Perhaps we can convince some institution to award degrees for our studies? But I would rather not be tested over my knowledge of Barlows!:D

I'm known in my family for very rarely using bad language, preferring Dadgummit! or Goodness! to more common expletives. But today, and on many other days, I can often be heard blurting out, "DAMN! That's a nice knife, Primble!"
