What Makes a Good, Traditional Barlow?

Beautiful bone handled Boker and an Ulster with a great bolster stamp.

Wowzer-- you're right about that. Fine additions, both, and photographed well.

I'm still not sure of the username(!), but you've caught the character and appeal of the butterscotched scratty Ancient well.

Regarding Boiley:
It looks different now than the last picture shown in the thread. It has a certain richness to it. Look on page 24 for details. I carried Charlie's scan from back then forward:

Richness, yes, and also translucent depth. I, too, look forward to a new scan and what it might reveal.

Charlie also sold me a beautiful Robeson Strawberry Bone Barlow with a sheepsfoot blade in mint condition,

Then to my surprise Charlie gave me a Bluegrass Barlow with brass bolsters, what a generous gift, I don't know what to say other than Thank You Charlie!

Wonderful, Augie! I've admired the strawberry knife in particular for a few years now; I'm glad it's going from being cherished to cherished, in its re-home. :)

Great assemblage of the Ancients as well!

I didn't mean to catch 'em all, myself, but could not resist the lagger, the Harlequin ebony. :o

Speaking of which....

The newest Harlequin, mark side cover:

(One has to see it in the light, moving, for the full effect.)

So: Harlequin all one one side, but also from side to side:

Sarah's right, it is really hard to appreciate the wood's character from a photograph, when held in the light, it just glows, such depth but out of direct light it goes back to it's normal looking wood.

Keeping in mind that I couldn't see my phone screen in the direct light needed to capture the following, and the resolution is poor, but here's at least some idea of how 'alive' the grain is, and the fluidity of the transformation, side to side:

Other than my neighbors, mayhap? ;)

Ed: I give up. The video looks good in preview, then goes to kankamangus once posted.

Y'all get the idea, I hope.

Thanks Sarah for the YouTube video on the Ancient Ebony TC. I have one coming so you have really swelled my anticipation of getting it. The Ebony handles really compliment the whole Ancient/New concept envisioned by Charle. It is amazing how the richness and color changes by the slight rotation of the TC in light. I know that each is different and unique and that makes them special. Thanks again, Lloyd

Great pictures Rob! The resolution and the crispness of the detail in the photographs is simply outstanding. Beautiful folder:thumbup::thumbup: Lloyd

Looks good, Primble, can we see a comparison shot with a TC?

Here you go Phil. NYKC Barlow, TC Barlow and Fishbone Barlow. I made mine a little more wider than the NYKC which Charlie used as the template for the TC's. The length is the same on them all at 3 1/2" and I used .06" liners versus .03" liners on the NYKC and TC Barlows. I hope this helps your question (s) about copy cattin.

Paul and Ryan - Yours are going to be finished in a couple days. I have to put new bearings in my cheapo belt sander for finish grind.

Mark, to say I'm excited is an understatement, but when time allows works for me brother...no hurry on my end:cool::thumbup:

Thanks for that comparison shot Mark. I thought it looked a bit wider but couldn't visualize it. That length really is the sweet spot. Primble's photos captured the final product very nicely.

Thank you for asking that Philllll I too enjoyed the comparison, Mark, I KNOW FOR A FACT that your knife from you to Paul ( from the way he talks ), is going t be a VERY special knife!! I cant speak for Ryan...but I would suspect that he too will feel the same!

Mark...thats awesome work, I enjoyed it when it was "released", and you must be proud to see your work at this level my friend.
