What Makes a Good, Traditional Barlow?

This next TC is a re-purposed Barlow :rolleyes: Re-purposed from Primble's pocket to mine, after a few negotiations had taken place :rolleyes:;)

Good twade then ?? :confused::confused::D

Ron- Great old sheepfoot you got there! Hopefully you didn't have to send Primble home with an extra arm & leg to get it! :D

Steve- Beautiful ancient barlow you got there! An excellent example to have as your first TC! :thumbup:

:thumbup::D:D

The list is in a box that I shipped to myself, but there were a few of each; Ancients, Pop Scouts, New Days with one and two blades!

:eek::thumbup::thumbup::thumbup::D

I am catching up on the last six or seven pages and am enjoying seeing everyone's photos and sharing in your excitement. Charlie's worries about this run proved to be unwarranted and I am glad that this run was so successful, as all have been.

I love all of mine and the TC Barlows are a very first rate knife to collect. I really love the stamped blade and also it's well thought out placement, where it shows when the blade is closed. I would love to see variations of blade stamps continue on successive editions, as it makes an already fantastic knife just so much more distinguished. But that is my opinion, it is Charlie's call and I always find that his choices make for wonderful knives. ;):)

The Rendezvous was even better than expected and I am so glad that I attended and made personal acquaintances and got to spend a little time talking to many of you. I wish I had stayed to the end and plan to return for the duration next year. As I drove home, I realized so many things that I didn't get to do or should have done. The time just flew by. Every single person I met was kind and made a positive impression.

Sarah called me out for the pic of the old guy with long white hair and beard that I mischievously posted (and later deleted) in the mug shot thread last year. I got quite a laugh out of that ! ;):D

There were other great impressions made besides the great folks there. The knives !!! :eek::eek::eek::thumbup::thumbup::D

Charlie's fabulous Barlow collection has left me tossing and turning in my sleep, especially those integral bolstered Gardners.

Lyle's collection of Farmers Jacks were on display and also very memorable.

Sarah's Harlequin I loved and got a chance to admire it up close.

Evan's step bolstered Rosewood Barlow and small Scout knife were of high quality and even better to see in person. I should have tried to trade him out of the step bolstered Barlow. I might have had a knife to get it done, but, I would have been sad to let it go. It is gratifying to see a young man make such progress in such a short time. I expect he will be a force in custom knife making for many years to come.

Lastly, the one knife that made the GREATEST impression on me was "Ole Boiley", Charlie's boiled long pull spear Copperhead PPP that he doctored up and got a fair amount of teasing for it, early in the pages of this thread. He pulled it out and let me handle and admire it, as we conversed in the halls of GEC. He said that he carries it everyday, regardless of what other knife he might be toting. That knife has so much character and I suppose him carrying it everyday has made it's charm much better. I just loved that knife !!! ( I wish I had questioned him further about everything he did to that knife - where he carries it on his person, etc. - and maybe should have asked to take it outside for a photo session. Well, maybe next year. )

I will update the history thread when the numbers come in from this run. ;):)

Ok... Pics coming. Must say this thread always reminds me of knives gone by. Maybe to come again one day! I just received my Ancient TC and WOW! Blown away! Thanks Charlie and thanks to all who posted superb pics!

Not me mate, I have about as much interest in cricket as I have in hitting my head with a tea-tray! :D :thumbup:

Haha too true, I'm all about the footy after international boarding school. Thank you Jack :)

Great to hear of another subject of Her Majesty with a total disregard for cricket and a love of blades, that makes at least two of us! It the could be the start of a new joke -
"A Brit, an Aussie and a Kiwi entered a bar in summer, turned off the TV, drew their knives from their pockets and ...... "

If you ever want to witness the cultural depths of another sport besotted community go to the State of Victoria in Oz with the only 10 month extended "winter" season in the world to accommodate their mania for Australian Rules Football with 18 players on the field for each team. Pre, actual and post season coverage drowns TV, print and radio for all 12 months of the year for what was once a four month 'footy' season. Aaaaaggggghhh!

hahaha this gave me a laugh. I think It takes about a minute for me to take my riding gloves off and draw a knife so I'm a goner in this one.

Do not rule yourself out yet as the punchline is yet to be determined. You may be the best:
a) whittler;
b) dart board knife thrower;
c) creative coon fingerer;
d) Ploughman's lunch pickle slicer; or
e) a late arrival Yankee who turned up for a 'Tea Party' at a knife swap in a pub.

It looks different now than the last picture shown in the thread. It has a certain richness to it. Look on page 24 for details. I carried Charlie's scan from back then forward:
