What Makes a Good, Traditional Barlow?

Dang, that's some black wood!

I'll say. In most lighting, the ebony on my spear main almost looks like rosewood in comparison.

It's one thing to read about a different type of ebony, quite another to experience it first-hand. It's not just the appearance, but the feel. The Gabon (blackety-black) ebony has a different texture; it feels "oilier," even though it's not oily at all! Denser, perhaps(?). Very fine stuff.

Aside from my Charlows, this also came in the mail today, courtesy of a deal with Doug Add:

I need to get some better pics, as the bone on it has aged so well.

Got mine today, thanks again Charlie. I really like the amber sawcut tan scales on my double blade. The ebony looks nice on my single blade, but is a hair darker than my single blade spear barlow. Either way, I like them.

Charlows. I like that.

Well done everyone, its great to see these rolling out into actuality, just ordinary folk like us get to own a mans dream, that dream being of course the birth one day of a true Traditional.
Charlie, I am happy to wait, so please don't take my ribbing the other guys - if I got them in a year, Id be a VERY happy man.
Please everyone, lets see those photo's of your new babies...I especially love the Red Bone......man its going to be a good day when I slip that beaut into my coin pocket!

Thank you Charlie.

Here's my two. Thank you Charlie, these are superb.
Please excuse the raindrops in the pics. I couldn't keep up.

Very nice Brian!!! one compliment deserves another my friend;) I love both the picture of the knives and the back drop:thumbup:

These pictures of the ebony only reinforce my "want" of the ebony!!!

Those GEC Barlows sure are gorgeous. For some reason I have an affinity for that style. My only Barlows to date are a couple of Case Barlows, but I like 'em.

Woohoo!! My ebony clip blade showed up with todays mail. Its a gorgeous knife, nice dark ebony, much darker than the ebony on my single blade spear point. Superb fit and finish, very pleased with these TC Barlows.

That Ebony turned out real nice!
I like the Macassar on the Spear bladed Barlows a lot, but this Gabon is mighty special. When I bought it a couple of years ago, it was just a lark. I envisioned trading it to a custom maker or something like that, just because it's hard to find. I'm, glad I stuck it in the back of the closet instead! I'll remember this batch of knives fondly, for many reasons.:)
It's wonderful to know that a lot of you fine friends will have one or two kicking around, long after I kick something else!
Not that I'm planning on kicking anything soon!!:D

They look perfect! Looking forward to slipping mine into my pocket when
it gets here. Fantastic example of an old great pattern.... Thanks once again Charlie

Enablers one and all....not upset except that I missed the spear blades.
I've managed to find an ebony 2 blade clip and depleted the PP fund...oh well. The only thing I'd like is to change the etch to say "T hanks C harlie", and I'm already trying to gt my spiel down for when I explain where the ebony came from and how I actually 'know' the guy that provided it.

Forgot this: Charlie, I need to know how you pronounce your last name, do you give it the 'traditional' sound by blending the 'agna' together into one sound?
