What Makes a Good, Traditional Barlow?

I don't post here often, but this thread and many members here helped me get to this point. Still need a pair of LP clips, nail-nick clips, and nail-nick spears, of course. And then on to wood!

Nice!!! On to wood, it will be a fun journey!

Old Boiley senior; probably the longest serving TC Barlow!

Unwrapped Dec 7th, 2012, and except for a couple of quick baths, has been in one of my pockets ever since (maybe with a few short holidays)! :o

Last sharpened about the 15th of April, 2015. Stropped yesterday!
Still cuts writing paper cleanly!! Old "B" has come to be my favorite knife. I have kitchen knives for cooking, but Old "B" does everything else!!

Ole Boiley has ALL the right stuff. Magnificent !! ................. and now a member of my desktop ..... thank you very much. ;):thumbup::D

Thinkin' about dropping my Copperhead in for a drink of ACV. Are the results predictable and guaranteed ?:confused::confused:;):D

Nice to see 'Old Boiley' Charlie! Nice job on your ancient Primble, the grey looks good

Blimey, that IXL has seen some use Charlie!

Thank you Jack. :thumbup::)

Wow-- you've done a great job of capturing the covers well. There's a lot going on on that pile side....

Choombak, beautiful photos of that 25 right there. Love all the detail in the pile. :)

Thank you for the kind words, pertinux and Ryouchijtx. This barlow has quickly become my favorite.

Choombak, I've got a similiar barlow to yours, I like your clip, but I really like that my pen is behind the main. And you have pretty cool pile side bone, great knife!

Ah yes indeed! I never thought there would be another blade arrangement. Now that I know it, I have an opinion too - pen behind main seems better than other way round. :-)

Fantastic waynorth - it looks well used and well oiled.

I am curious - which pockets do folks prefer carrying their barlows? I typically carry it in a KSF leather sheath on my right side front trouser pocket. But the sheath makes it a bulky carry, and I now intend to do away with it.

Charlie, it was a real treat to get to see Old Boiley senior in person. It's a testament to the longevity and quality of these knives, and makes me wish I had a spear TC! I especially like how the grain of the bone has been brought out.

My longest owned, and far and away most used traditional is my Smooth Ivory Bone Real Sheepfoot TC. If I recall correctly, I got it in late summer/early fall of 2012 (might be wrong). It was my reintroduction to traditional knives, though I grew up receiving traditionals from my dad, and my first introduction to GEC. Though it's been the cause of much wallet thinning, I'm happy I learned of such a great PA company and have gotten to know some of you good people if only a little (brings to mind Bilbo's speech from his going away party).

I think a good traditional Barlow, in this day and age, is a pocket knife that can be used and/or admired for years to come while connecting those strange fellows who share a common interest in quality cutlery.

I haven't boiled my original TC, but I'm a sweaty guy and it's gained some interesting character in the bone and some good grey patina on the well used blade. Maybe "Old Oily" haha

choomback: I mostly carry in my back right, sometimes watch pocket.

ALLHSS, I think Old Oily (aging nicely BTW) was made in 2013. Nice to see you again at GEC!!

I carry in my RF or watch pocket usually, with sometimes another in my LF.
Carrying a knife in a back pocket always worries me, that I might sit on it and damage it. Ouch!

I have recently decided to start a sub collection of vintage USA made Barlows. Been perusing Ebay and of course the exchange as well as estate sales, flea markets and so on. I like all Barlows but I have a thing about razor blades on a two blade don't know why just really like them.

love seeing Old Boiley. Nothing like a knife that's a constant companion. This one, recently dubbed Augustine for his simple, elegant demeanor, and because I've been carrying him most of August! LOL, is becoming just such a riding partner.

Got this old boy in my pocket today.

I posted this in the wrong Thread. Meant to post it in What Traditional Knife are you carrying today. That's what happens when you get old you don't know what your doing anymore.
