What Makes a Good, Traditional Barlow?

I have some rare ones, but this may be my favorite. If this existed in soup, I'd be in heaven.

Josh, someone will correct me if I'm wrong but I think it came about after the Civil War or WW1, lot of amputees. This style of blade could be opened by a one armed man by hooking it on your belt or pocket.

My new KA-BAR Dog's Head Coppersmith! First thing I noticed was the "worm groove" is extended into the copper bolster, on mark and pile sides.:eek: This is a sweet knife - very well made.

I like the ripple effect on that bone. You have a complete circle effect like the drop landed in the center. I have a parchment with one sided ripple, almost gives a wobbled sawcut effect. I would shoe a pic but I gave it to my parents to give to me for xmas. it's even wrapped and at their house. I wish I could see it again. Soon enough. I always enjoy your photography.

Wow... this sage (the correct word?) color of the bone is amazing. The combination with the copper bolsters is very appealing. At least to me.
Thanks for sharing.

Alright, I have a question. Stupid maybe - so excuse my ignorance. But I just saw a pic of a Grand Daddy Barlow posted by Augie in another thread.
Where does the term come from? Is this a sized up Barlow for old men? I know about the ease of production due to the long bolsters in semi-industrial-times. But was it actually designed for old gentlemen with (maybe) atritic fingers? I´ve seen EO knives from that time. This would make more sense for me when it comes to the ease of opening the blade(s).

Or was it a term of marketing ... ?

Two perfect specimens, Jack!!

Andi
The grandaddy is just larger than a regular sized barlow. Grandaddy is a colloquial expression

Congratulations Jack

Just picked this one up. Had been dreaming of finding one the day before with all the forum knife discussion past and present and boom it appeared on the exchange:
