That's a great-looking Queen Barlow Ron

Jack, Thank you for the info on the Apprentices. I am the supervisor over 6 Tool and Die Apprentices.
Our program is 4 years and I was just thinking that we would not have many that would be willing to go 8 years.
Especially considering those terms and conditions. :)

You're welcome my friend, 8 years on no wages too, just room and board, which could often be pretty rotten! Generally they didn't start their apprenticeships until 14 either, when their unbound contemporaries would have already been earning a wage. The drop-out rate was fierce, but runaways were hunted, and rewards issued for their return.

Good for you in helping to train young 'uns today Ron, I'll try and post more about the conditions of apprentice cutlers sometime

Sweating over some Barlow history tonight! Got a name for Obadiah's dad, and for the cutler he was apprenticed to! :)

To those who dont know Sue and I were SO SO LUCKY to meet Jack in England when we went over - I dont think I can ever forget that day - it was fantastic - jack took all his time and gave it to us and took us around Sheffield, and I truly LOVED Jacks vast knowledge and commentary as we went through Sheffield - so YES PLEASE Jack - some more tales of the hardships that were endured - not only by the tough Sheffield Male and Female workers- but those poor kids!!!

One would hope that a tough apprenticeship would result in a well-trained cutler! Probably not always true though . . . . . .many factors were involved.

GuestWho101, I see the Case(?) Sheepfoot in the corner, and many other things I like in your picture. No Barlows though . . . . .???

The pleasure was all mine Duncan, it was wonderful to spend a day with you and Sue, and I am now unable to visit Sheffield without fondly remembering our visit :)

LOL! You're a tough man Charlie Campagna, I can just see that written on a shingle hanging over the hearth of an old cutler's workshop! :D

This thread is one of the best on this forum so many new and old balows, thank you all for keeping this thread alive and kicking and thank Charlie who freed the barlow bug.
It has been quiet sometime since I have owned a barlow, and really forgot how handy it is and pretty it its own simple way, but this was changed after I got this fantastic Case barlow and had Glenn re scaled its broken pile side with his great skill. Now I can't get it out of my pocket.

Mike, Glenn did a great job on that knife, a Case red bone is one of the best, enjoy.

Thanks guys! I was fortunate to find some of 'em, and I'm proud to be the current conservator. :)
